Not gonna lie……didn’t see it coming.
The Sybok reveal? I saw it coming and honestly I would have liked to have seen sybok as a main character on this show than Uhura or Chapel, who if we go by tight cannon should not even be on the show.

I tend to notice the opening credits even if I'm not really paying attention. No Uhura so no Celia Rose Gooding. Same with Bruce Horak (again). Same thing with Picard and Discovery (although Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones still get credited when they aren't in the episode). It's one way to save money. Doesn't really happen for network TV, though I saw it with 24 and the final season of The West Wing.

- It's mentioned early on that the Federation doesn't like to have their ships stray too far outside of Federation space. Say what? Isn't the whole point of Starfleet to explore beyond Federation space? Pretty sure they don't just patrol around established territory. That'd make it pretty hard to find any strange new worlds, new life or new civilizations, would it not?
You can explore beyond Federation Space, but you just have to be within Subspace Relay range.

It's like having a Subspace COMM leash on your StarShip

Also, didn't one of the TOS eps establish a Phaser Turret in the Bridge ceiling?

That would've been pretty useful right about now.

Tight canon? How so?
uhura and chapel should not be on Pike's crew.
meanwhile Sybok is Spock's elder brother and the show is a spin off of discovery which was based on a young girl called Michael that Sarek adopts. it makes far more sense to dig into the house of sarek than just use legacy characters like chapel and uhura.

I don’t mind Uhura being there but I agree that Chapel is a bit much. Lieutenant Moustache as well.

yes chapel is a bit much, I think she should have just been a new character and this episode I am mixed on it.

Uusally
Yeah, you said that. I was just wondering what 'tight canon' says that. I was hoping you'd define 'tight canon', because as far as I know canon is just what happens on-screen in the TV shows and movies. That's why I'm asking what exactly precludes them from being on Pike's crew from what happens on-screen?
uhura never served with pike and she had no reaction to seeing pike in TOS when he had become paralysed. Uhura should not be on the crew, in cannon she served first under Jim Kirk.

Chapel joined the crew to search for her fiancé and her character here as many have said is so different, it is hard to reconcile both.

Okay. Maybe I'm not being specific enough. Actually, nevermind. Thanks for letting me know.

Back to the episode. Absolute triumph, in my view. Really pleased with that.
