Jeez do all of these threads devolve into canon arguments?

It was "meh" with this episode. I didn't feel the Una / La'an story so much, but the Spock / T'Pring plot was goofy fun at first before redeeming itself with a point. I enjoyed Pike's hunch. These aliens were pretty TNG for my taste but they were amusing.

Not great. Not bad.

As far as we know, Sarek and Perrin had no children of their own.
As far as we know, Sarke and Perrin had children of their own. See, it could go either way.

For what it's worth the official Star Trek website says that it's Spock that got married and that this is what Picard was referring to: https://www.startrek.com/database_article/spock . Whether you accept this or not depends on whether you accept the words of the official Star Trek website run by CBS/Paramount as canon. (Yes the site has errors but rule of thumb I personally do take it as canon unless a filmed work overrides it)
The Great Bird of the Galaxy had declared:
"Hold unto canon that which is on screen, either movie or tv. Except for TAS. All else is not."
TAS characters/situations only become canon when brought in in canon sources.

I really love the irony of people arguing over what's real and what isn't real in an entirely fictional construct.
This really isn't that bad. Here in Trek land we're still acknowledging reality. We say that Kyle was white in TOS and now he's Asian, etc. We acknowledge that there was a different take on canon and that there are changes.

Over at that star franchise, it's complete Orwellian history rewrites. Ewok movies and the first Clone Wars tv show among others aren't only no longer canon, we're pressured by other fans and even mods to say that they were *never* canon and that somehow we all knew this decades ago when they originally aired. It's full on Gul Madred telling us to say there are 5 lights.

it used to be like this, until the TAS DVDs came out and TAS was suddenly conveniently declared canon.

Chapel, insanely jealous of how T'Pring gets close to Spock with this body swap, demands that Spock mind meld with her even though he warns that this might severely affect her personality. She insists anyway and he complies, severely altering Chapel's personality into what we get in TOS. Problem resolved.

Well, it's obviously not Sybok, so therefore it must be Spock. Sarek had no other sons.

As for who he married: Probably Saavik.

About Chapel, I think she has already met, fallen for, and lost Roger Korby by this point in her life. Would be kind of a nice explanation as to why she's so...noncommittal. She's afraid she'll lose the next one just like she lost Korby.

In any case, it's unlikely that SNW will ever mention Korby anyway. Wouldn't they have to pay royalties to whoever wrote "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" if they did?

they would have to mention him because he was brought up importantly in tos and chapel is engaged to him in the show.

i think snw can still play loose with some little stuff but the big stuff will have to line up to TOS and regardless of what happens between chapel and spock here in snw, we know for a fact they are not a couple in TOS and he spends most of the show barely talking to her also rekindling his thing with leia and having a thing for zarabeth.

whatever he has with chapel here in SNW, it was long gone and done by TOS.

At the time canon was the OT for me. The rest felt very different from that series of films. I doubt I knew the term canon at that time but I definitely never treated them as the term is used now.

But, then I don't understand the obsession over canon. Does enjoyment go down if it's not canon? Do people stop watching because canon status changes?

I've watched with both Star Trek and Star Wars and yet to grasp why thus impacts personal enjoyment.

Yeah maybe the fanfic form is more your jam.

Because it's a fan site, and that's what fans do.

I really love the irony of people arguing over what's real and what isn't real in an entirely fictional construct.
Regardless, it's understandable that things that maintain continuity tend to foster immersion, and so that this sort of thing is desired and its opposite detested.

If there's no canon then it's even more ridiculous to attempt to reconcile SNW events with TOS ones.

In fact maybe we shouldn't even discuss Star Trek here.

985th, actually.
I don't think I'd be here if the only thing we discussed is canonicity. I kind of like rejecting the whole concept, but I also enjoy conversing, and understand it is a frame people embrace.

Re: 985. When I edited, my stats on the side said 1000. Are you saying 15 of my posts are non-canonical????

I think this is the first SNW episode that Spock's rank was mentioned as Lieutenant. Pike and Uhura are now the only members of the main cast wearing correct rank insignia. I honestly don't understand how the costume designer could be so sloppy.
