Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I think it’s basically that (Tennant fulfilling the ‘one and done’ role that Ecclestone was for himself, though with three specials… unless 11 and 12 are having a crack too..) with a possibility of a surprise Christmas present this year.
I guess it's less what I expect/makes sense would happen than what I'd like to see, which is on me I guess.

The BBC news releases about the casting of Tennant, Tate, and Finney all say 2023 specifically. RTD’s press quotes are all along the lines of “2023 is going to be amazing” or “talk to me in 2023 for more details.” This special (which as has been pointed out isn’t even confirmed to have Christmas set dressing) is not airing in 2022. Maybe early 2023, if RTD was engaging in misdirection when he suggested his new era would start in November 2023.
It occurs to me that RTD could be sticking with the 2023 date out of professional courtesy to Chibnall and Whittaker. He doesn't want fans to be hyped up now about what he's doing, and he's been clear about that. He wants fans to be hyped up about what they're doing. If he is planning something for Christmas or New Years, he doesn't want that overshadowing Jodie's finale, so saying 2023 over and over is a way to cool the hype machine on him.

RTD has said in so many words that they’re revealing as little as possible about his new era because Whittaker is still the current Doctor. But irrespective of that, nothing else is coming in 2022, or the BBC wouldn’t be saying 2023 in it’s official announcements. The idea of a surprise episode is neat, but it’s not how the BBC operates.

New Year’s 2023? Maybe, but I doubt they want to follow up on the centenary special that quickly. Once you’ve done a regeneration, even a pseudo regeneration like they seem to be planning, you want to take some time and let that cliffhanger sit. More than a year would be an awfully long time, though, so it wouldn’t shock me if the Tennant specials ended up spaced through the year somehow . It’ll depend on how much of a narrative throughline they have, though; if they’re basically a mini-season they might work better clustered in November 2023.

I remember The Time of the Doctor nine years ago was shot around September/early October, or at least that's what I read at the time, and it was broadcast in December. They're shooting a Tennant episode now, so why would they wait to broadcast until a year later is also not how BBC do things, I'd imagine.

All the Doctors were there too; on the back of the buses that were reflecting their respective decades. Bet Christopher 'Hang the Parasites' Eccleston wasn't too happy about that...

Daniel Craig will be excellent in the anniversary special.
The UK will go bonkers when they find out James Bond is indeed a Time Lord...and not just any Time Lord!

Which would, in fact, make it four Doctors on the back there.
