Your favourite episode for your least favourite character?

Summer Solstice

Captain
Captain
The EMH is my least favourite main character. My favourite episode which focuses on him is "Message In A Bottle". Only the EMH could complete this mission and the episode features the Romulans in a way that makes a lot of sense. I also love "Lifesigns". It's sweet and gives us more of an idea what life is like for the Vidiians.

What's your favourite episode that focuses on your least favourite character?

I'd have to say "Latent Image" as the Doctor has to deal with the fallout that his ever expanding ego and hubris, he becomes a sympathetic character for an episode when it looks like he is losing his mind over the guilt of his choice. When the most logical (and simplest) choice for the crew would be to wipe his programme and resort to a default EMH, they do all they can so he can hold on to the (often times insufferable) person he has become.

Probably "Scientific Method" for me, the GOAT and the crew were tormented by strange illnesses throughout their passing of that portion of space. Seven of Nine discovered there were alien scientists who were responsible for those illnesses, including deaths amongst the crew. She was the only one who was able to see these evil scientists and let the GOAT know about this. GOAT Janeway confronted the lead alien scientist about what they have been doing. The alien unsympathetically responds their experiments are for medical research and could be of benefit to everyone in her space. She has the gall to draw comparisons to research done by humans on rats and apes. I have to add these pieces of poodoo have been progressively amping her dopamine levels and hyper-stimulating her aggressive impulses to study her mental state.

The GOAT was literally having a mental breakdown, and finally loses it after another incident she pilots Voyager on a course between a binary pulsar at full speed. The lead alien can't get back control of the ship and desperately makes an ultimatum to the GOAT. GOAT Janeway blows her off and runs an experiment of her own to see if Voyager's hull will crack if flown between the two pulsars. LOL!!! The alien scientists makes an attempt to bail both ships detach from Voyager's hull, but only one survives the gravitational forces.

I loved “Life Signs.”
Neelix was actually my least favorite character, but really like “Rise” for the dialogue with Tuvok and some exciting action scenes....visually, the tether was a very cool idea.

Proof that you REALLY don't want to piss Janeway off. You kill one of hers, she'll slaughter a ship full of yours.

The problem is deciding who my least favorite character is... the Doc could be irritating sometimes, and Chakotay and Kim were badly underused... but none of them were all that bad. I guess I'll go with the one I decided to kill off in my one Voyager fanfiction...

To that end, I rather liked "Faces". It was rather interesting to see what B'Elanna would have been like both as a Klingon and as a human.

GOAT? I get you mean Janeway. But what?

I never liked 7 of 9 as a character that much. Yet another, and by this time tired concept of someone Who Discovers What It Means To Be An Individual Or Human - after several other series had done this already and even within the same series we already had the EMH on a similar arc of discovery. And then I'm not even talking about the way they costumed her yet.

None of this is the fault of the actress though, who did a terrific job with the character concept she was given and it's only thanks to her we got a character that was still worth to have in the stories.

There were other, perhaps far blander characters on VOY, such as Kim or later Chakotay, who didn't nearly get as much story material. But I had no problems with the concept of their characters, even if they were underutilized.

As for her best episode I might perhaps say Dark Frontier, when she comes face to face with her heritage and what it actually meant for her to be assimilated, and how everything was submerged under 'being Borg', so to speak. I'm just speaking about what it all would have meant for the character 7 of 9, not how plausible the backstory of the Hansens going after the Borg all alone, undetected for months using all kinds of fantastic cloacking and mimicking technology is in the first place, or the inconsistencies it causes.

I also like episodes such as infinite regress, but for a different reason - as she got to play a few very different personalities for a change and she does so convincingly.

Don't like Neelix but I liked a lot "Mortal Coil", really good use of him overall.

Likewise/runner-ups for Harry Kim "The Chute" and "Ashes to Ashes" and (though more AU) "Timeless".

"Warlord" for Kes - because she wasn't being Kes!

Jennifer Lien really did seem to take much more satisfaction and joy in this role than her usual one. (Sorry, Lynx. I know I'm in for it.)

I love "Warlord" as well, and "Before and After".

Homestead for Neelix. Because it was his last in person episode. :p

As implausible as finding a group of Talaxians so far away was he did get the nicest send off of the cast I thought.

He did get the nicest send off - he's the only character where we know what happened to him (during the show, rather than in Nemesis, Picard or Prodigy).

As annoying as Neelix could be, I really liked Jetrel and the episode in which he dies and 7 brings him back.

I love Neelix in the Neelix-episodes - he's not annoying (to me) in them. My favourite Neelix episode is Fair Trade. But Jetrel, the one where Neelix dies and Once Upon A Time are probably in my top 50 episodes.

You can pick more than one character if you want to. "Faces" is my favourite B'Elanna episode too and B'Elanna is my favourite character.

Seven has grown on me a lot. The concept of someone Who Discovers What It Means To Be An Individual Or Human has been done a lot, and on rewatching the shows I was getting a bit bored with some of the Data and EMH episodes because of that. I think given the amount of screentime that Seven had, she should actually have had more character development so that she would have finished discovering what it means to be an individual or human by the middle of season 6. Episodes like "One Small Step" and "Tsunkatse" ended up being Seven-episodes when it felt like they should have focussed on Paris or Chakotay or Tuvok, but they could have been more about the friendship between those characters and Seven.

I hadn't considered that aspect of Dark Frontier.

Problem is picking any of them. I like B'Elanna, actually. My only issue with her is that she was promoted to chief engineer for assaulting a superior officer when she should have done a stretch in the brig.

By that logic, maybe Harry would have made lieutenant if he'd just socked Tuvok or Chakotay in the jaw...

Ain't that the truth. We still don't know if Tuvok got his mind meld (though there's no reason to doubt it), or if Tom reconciled with his dad. And the "Harry the Eternal Ensign" crowd still has a leg to stand on.

think the episodes that focused on him almost always focused on the sadness and loss he hid behind his cheerful mask.

It showed that he was more than Voyager's ever-perky cruise director.

"Before and After."

I never cared for Kes, and I don't like the scenario shown in the alternate future, to put it mildly. But I love the time travel episode, I'm trash for alternate timeliness, and I like weird relationships in stories. So while I hate Tom marrying Kes, I love the general idea of an Ocampa mix-marriage and all the weirdness that would result.

Hey Summer, it is interesting the Doctor is your least fav character. I know he could be too much occasionally but still ... it's quite curious.
As for me, it's difficult to choose one - I like them all much better than the main character on most shows  (Trek and non-Trek ...). If I absolutely had to choose someone, I would probably go for Harry - he was ... childish most of the time. And my fav episode with him would probably be DEMON - the whole concept of the living silver blood was interesting without taking it too far. And, at least there were no wrong women to fall for on that planet! :adore:

Yes. Either Linnis will live a long time and so Kes won't get to see much of her life or see her grandchild or Linnis will live a short time like Kes and Tom will outlive his daughter and grandson. Unless the writers had decided to explore the idea more and made half/quarter-Ocampans have a short childhood but live a lot longer than Ocampa.

I like all the Voyager characters. I really liked the Doctor and Kes's interactions in the first few seasons - they were so sweet. Towards the end of the show, some of the Doctor's stories seemed a bit repetitive and Janeway didn't stop him doing things that she would (probably) have stopped other characters doing. As fun as the holodeck program in "Author, Author" is, it was very disrespectful to the Doctor's friends, almost like he didn't acknowledge that they were his friends. Have you seen Robert Picardo in Stargate Atlantis? His character shares the Doctor's love of opera.

I agree about Harry being childish at times. I love "The Thaw" and I think Harry is brilliant in "Timeless". I really love "Emanations" and I think most people don't like that episode that much. I love stories about mythology or spirituality. I think Harry kept falling for the wrong women because he expected to either be in love by the end of the first date or break up at that point - if he'd gone on a few dates with the "wrong" Delaney sister he might have decided she wasn't the "wrong" Delaney sister for example.

You just have to put normal inhibitions on hold for that concept. Given that the human age of consent is 16-18, and the Ocampan lifespan is 9, it won't work otherwise.

I actually wonder if Vulcans have a longer than normal childhood, actually. T'Pol looked about twentysomething, and she was actually 66.

If I absolutely had to choose someone, I would probably go for Harry - he was ... childish most of the time.

If that had been the case, a lot more about him would have worked (including his low rank). But it seemed to me like he was a competent, professional model Starfleet officer most of the time, only acting like a spoiled preteen when the script needed someone to do that, and reverting to his normal state afterward like it never happened.

Unless the writers had decided to explore the idea more and made half/quarter-Ocampans have a short childhood but live a lot longer than Ocampa.

I think that by B&A, they had decided to write Kes and the Ocampa in general out of the show, so they had the Ocampan short lifespan dominant just for the plot potential, i.e. two generations of Kes's offspring while the human participants scarcely aged. But I like to think that Linnis and Andrew would have had longer lifespans overall. Given that morilogium is a suddenly occuring phenomenon, it seems feasible that it might be delayed years for Linnis and decades for Andrew.
