Stop gatekeeping. Fans are not obligated to watch everything a franchise releases. If you don't like something, don't watch it. Let people make up their own minds, it's not your job.

Good and bad are subjective, just because YOU dislike something, doesn't mean everyone will dislike it.

I feel i owe it to my friends who might not have the time to watch it and ask me what I thought of it. Some are not so interested in the serialized story telling so I let them know what I think. I watch a lot of TV and movies so its always been that way.

I am confident that you don't owe them anything.

This "duty" is completely self-inflected masochism.

Yeah, but dude...you're not sharing consumer research with your friends here. You're talking to strangers who've mostly already seen the thing.

Not that I like STD, either...

Gatekeepers aren't fans, they are zealots. They are comparable to religious nut jobs who stand on street corners with signs that read "the end is near".

And speaking as a Star Trek fan of 45 years, I enthusiastically recommend all the new Star Trek shows with the caveat that not all iterations of the show will appeal to everybody.

Indeed. And in fact I have had more even keeled discussion with religious zealots than with Trek fans at times.

Also, I would be hard pressed to gatekeep against any Trek fandom since I am a very opinionated Trek fan regarding what works for me.

A friend is just a stranger you haven’t trolled yet.

That said, I would defend against any gate keeping your right to watch, criticize, and report back. It’s just the right thing to do. For example, I trusted others to watch the Six O’Clock Follies that were the White House updates on COVID. Those people watched it so I didn’t have to.

So, for your adventures in curation,

Thank you. I do try and keep others in the loop of what's going on. I'll take the lumps watching STD so they don't have to. :brickwall:

Who exactly? Are you on other sites warning folks? Do you talk Trek with co-workers, family and strangers on the street?

As a fan of the Star Trek universe I want to watch even the series I have issues with just to keep up with Trek goings on, but I'd hardly call it a "duty"...and I certainly feel no duty to review anything.

Life's too short to watch TV that annoys you.

At this point I've probably seen about 3/4 of Trek and the percentage is going down with time.

Yeah but during operation annihilate McCoy refers to Kirks brother as Sam as well as Sam's wife. I suspect Captain Kirk didn't keep in touch with his brother for some time by the time of that episode because he was so preoccupied with his career. Maybe he didn't talk to Sam much when Sam was on the Enterpruse. Sam seems more laid back the Captain Kirk and it probably cause trouble between them or maybe even jealousy when Captsin Kirk rose up in ranks and became pretty famous and Sam ended up being stationed at Denova which was a federation colony but his career seemed to be on the down low.

During early TOS, communication with far flung space vessels was not treated as casual and common.

They even referred to the now-forgotten "subspace lag" which often meant that real-time communication was impossible.

Yeah Captain Kirk probably had no idea his brother was friends with Pike and everyone called him Sam and liked his mustache.
