Wow. I also had no idea. It looked CGI. That takes the alien emissary from the end of Close Encounters of the Third Kind to the next level, and this sort of animatronic technology was already pretty impressive by 1977.

I like that he had a beard.

I enjoyed the musical part. It's great when they use real science and logic, which Trek virtually never does.

Yeah, it's oversimplified, like the sublimation and climate seeding. But so what, that's Trek standard.
They did enough to make both of those aspects work story wise, which is what counts!

Was that Majel’s voice as the computer? Are they finally using the phonetic recordings she did just before she died.
Sure sounded like it to me! And strangely, it appears using whatever phonetic compiler to assemble her dialogue made it sound a bit choppy, just like the ship's computer in TOS.

Ortega even went out of her way to say it was a small ship.
More of a reference to the size of the crew than the size of the ship, IMO.

. ‪‪I’ll rewatch it I’m sure in the next couple days, ‪‪so I’m not certain, but ‪‪I don’t remember seeing M’Benga at all this episode (‪‪I watched it fairly late and tired, so I admittedly could’ve just missed him).
Didn't notice Babs in the credits.

Credits list Alex Kapp as the USS Enterprise Computer. (It sounded a little bit like Majel at the beginning of her line of speech, but then not at all when she ends with "originating in Kenya.")

Edit: Oops - got beat to the same response by Mr. Laser Beam!

They are supposed to be the best of the best and he is written to be a snowflake pansy with no grit or even shrug of the shoulders and refusal to take any action. Making him look helpless...
Rewatch the relevant DSC ep again. Ash's child says the crystal he grasps will show him his future, but only if he takes, breaking it off from the main body it will that future be, for want of a better phrase, set in stone. he saw his future, reeled back in horror... and then grasped it anyway. That is the action of a brave, brave man.

I'm about half-way through the episode. Pausing during the commercial break.

I'm liking Spock better in this episode than last. La'an is still my favorite character in SNW. Number One would be second. At first I didn't think I'd like Hemmer because he seemed like an asshole, but he seems okay.

I'm glad they have the one-way Chapel flirtation with Spock going on.

The story seems pretty standard so far and I could take it or leave it. Uhura's backstory felt too info-dump-y to me. That said, we found out more about Uhura in one scene than in all of TOS.

Something about Ortegas reminds me of Vasquez from Aliens. She's the outgoing tomboy with no inhibitions.

I don't agree with Pike about Lt. Kirk's mustache. I don't like it. Every time I see that 'stache I keep wanting to tell him, "Hey! 1982 called!" :p My father used to have a mustache like that in the '70s and '80s.

The visuals look great and I'm sold on the look for this series. Last week and during DSC Season 2, I was still on the fence about them going partially back to a more TOS Look, since I'm one of the people who thinks DSC made the right move by looking more like the movies. But SNW is making it work in about the only way I think it can work. So credit where credit's due.

unfortunately this is not correct. What Spock said about harmonics *is* correct, but what they did in the episode was done within the parameters of the tempered system, which is a system that has developed in Europe in relatively recent times, is still not the only one used today, and is only one of a virtually infinite number of possible systems. It sounds pleasing to us because we are used to it, but it wouldn’t to say ancient Greeks or modern people that don’t know it (at this point basically people living in lost tribes or something like that, I guess).

More likely the way we interpret harmonies and how pleasing they sound to us has something to do with the way our cochlea and auditory processing centers are hardwired to interpret them. A better criticism is that there's no reason to think aliens with nothing resembling the structure of our ears would experience them the same way.

How did the universal translator instantly translate the language of the Shepperds when they had never spoken before?1?!

The Vulcans have been in Space for half a million years. They may not explore much, but they've been around.

Human and Vulcan databases were merged at some point after the founding of the Federation.

The actual alien alien that Uhura hummed to was good. Spock chiming in, humming too, was also good and something that seems logical. La'an is -- like I expected -- not going to do any of that. ;)

The hard-headed alien that Pike's dealing with is a pain in the ass, but he's supposed to be, so it's okay. It's like he walked straight off of Voyager, the way he's acting. But I like how the Enterprise crew is taking his nonsense in stride.

They're not, we've seen them in trailers.

They've been using beams in the new series on (large) ships that since DSC Season 2.
Small ships, shuttles and fighters like ships are still using bolts. Though Seven's ship in Picard S1 had beams.

That's too bad. I'm tired of the a
Star wars pew pew lasers. Phasers were pretty unique to trek. Oh well. Just another reason to believe this is a alernate uni.
