Normally I would agree, but the same episode that revealed he locked her up also framed that revelation as Jean-Luc realizing his dad was not a complete monster. "I guess I never knew you" and all. So the framing by the narrative is confused.
Well, actually, Maurice acted out his idea... and his wife committed suicide.
Whether she committed suicide because she saw this as the last resort from being locked up... we don't know.
But, definitely, it really cannot be said that Maurice's way was successful.
To be fair, its Picard finding out his dad was coping in a terrible way with an extreme situation. Not "my father used to beat my mom and that's why she died." Which is perhaps hair splitting that doesn't need to be done.
It's also a one time thing that backfired spectacularly or at least that was my take on things.
Well we can judge by the fact it certainly didn't protect his wife from self-harm and may have resulted in it.

I don't think Picard is arguing locking his mother up was the better outcome. It's just in this situation it led to the WORST POSSIBLE OUTCOME. Getting Yvette some professional health from a doctor (which notably, Picard mentally casts his dad in) probably would have been ideal but Papa Picard certainly didn't do that.
And Baby Picard didn't.
Curious now, what would others do in Maurice's situation? Family member is struggling with mental illness and refusing to take medications that help. What do you do?
I mean that's not a hypothetical in my circumstances. Also, relatives have committed suicide. You do the best you can and sometimes it ends horribly.
The difference is Maurice had options we don't.
It's not for me either. But, I mean be Maurice with all the resources. People seem to have it all figured out.
There's also the distinct possibility that Maurice was dealing with mental issues of his own.

I said in a previous post, activate the Emergency Don’t Hang Yourself hologram. Obviously a joke but the point is in the 24th century there should be more evolved options than locking someone in their room by themselves.
At minimum, one would hope that there would be trained mental health intervention specialists who could be called upon 24/7 to assist without using force or imposing treatment without consent. This is a very common policy proposal from the various Defund the Police/Police Abolitionism organizations, and Yvette's situation would be a prime example of a scenario appropriate for such mental health professionals.

So you really think that based on how Earth is portrayed in Star Trek in the 24th century, that locking her in her room was the best option available ?

Robert's line that his brother has been too hard on himself hits even harder after the revelation of their mother's suicide. The fact Robert says it before Jean-Luc confesses to his anguish over being assimilated by the Borg is a peek into their relationship. He knows his little brother has been blaming himself for things over his life.
In a government organization, someone getting fired becomes the subject of company-wide gossip. I doubt if anyone else in the FBI is on the same quest to get fired as Agent Wells.
I haven't been here in a day and I'm just reading page 26 and still have to get to page 44, not complaining, just an observation. If others have already commented on the same things I have, between page 26 and 44, I'm sorry if this is a repeat.
But it does indicate in spite of series detractors, there is an interest in the show. At least I find the series interesting and entertaining, and for me that is all that matters.
