Sorry now but this is well wrong. Ask the Polish, Lithuanian or any other nation from the former Soviet states who lives in the UK or the Irish over there in the 20th century.white straight guys. I think the underlying theme of trauma probably doesn't speak to the audience in the same way it might to fans who fall into "otherized" groups.

Maurice Picard said:Your mother suffered cycles of terrible darkness, and irrational exhilaration. She needed help. But she wouldn't accept it.
my gut feeling is that yvette had irumodic syndrome which means there wasnt a cure anyway.
I know this is in the future but in the present i've actually seen drug treatment make mental illness much, much, much worse. its horrifying, and they get addicted to it and keep asking for more prescriptions etc
I would go so far to suggest that in a couple of centyuries direct mind interfaces will have made the need for GUI's and writing for that matter to be largely the sort of thing associated with specialists. The general human or post-human population will be functionally or even completely illiterate.unforgivable technological ignorance on the part of the writers.
I've done this before, as I enjoy listening to people examine why stories do and don't work. It's something I can put on and half-focus on while doing other work and if I had no interest in watching the series anyway I'm not concerned about spoilers. From one of the comments "have’t seen a single episode of this season. I’ve only seen Joe and RLM." Seen lots of other commentary like this. It's weird and beyond my comprehension. Why would you watch hours long negative commentary on each episode of a show you don't even care to watch?
But I also don't think any sci fi show is going to be able to survive showing that kind of future.
Straight white guy here. The theme speaks well to me.I think the underlying theme of trauma probably doesn't speak to the audience in the same way it might to fans who fall into "otherized" groups.
Of course it is...unforgivable technological ignorance on the part of the writers.
There's a poster here who does one and he does a good job.I've also been watching a lot of negative videos about Picard recently. Not because I've been looking for them, they just showed up in my regular subscriptions, and no one here ever recommends any positive ones!
Yup. It’s a quick mention, but it defintiely seems like Maurice encouraged her to get treatment.
There's probably more to the anti replicator thing now. Maybe Maurice was afraid Yvette would bypass safety procedures and replicate a weapon. This is not far fetched. Even with today's 3D printers you can create weapons if you know where to look and research on shady websites how to do itSo, its possible/likely even that Picard's weren't particualry averse to technology... except if perhaps Maurice decided not to use Replicators for example... and wanted to teach his kids to be more self reliant - but in fairness, he could have done that whilst having a replicator too... though, maybe he found that not having a replicator would have been easier to do that and avoid kids from 'cheating'... plus its possible Yvette and Maurice liked to hand cook meals.
Robert may have ended up on a more conservative spectrum in regards to technology than Maurice even (possibly exaccerbated by his mother's death), but even he ended up having 'some' technology at the chateou in TNG... even if it was minimal... for the sake of his wife and kid.

Straight white guy here. The theme speaks well to me.
But, I'm a bit different as I work in the mental health field. What is painfully frustrating to me is the sheer level of unwillingness to recognize what trauma does to the brain. "Can't you just get over it?" Is such a common phrase I hear and it's really shows a lack of awareness of mental health in general, trauma in particular.
But, the flip side is (and the sad reality is) people who struggle with mental illness also struggle with compliance with treatment, just like other ailments. Noncompliance is a very real part of treatment in this field, and insisting people get treatment is difficult because part of what mental health professionals do is validate autonomy.
Of course it is...
PADDs are less sophisticated than iPads, as evidenced by people being handed piles of PADDs to represent books and files repeatedly in the Berman era, because no one could predict at that time that we’d have the cloud repository of all of our information digitized with access to basically everything all the time so soon.
That is to say, if in the early 2300s Maurice Picard is a Luddite, I don’t think that would likely preclude using 300 year old technology. PADDs should basically be antiques at this point. Or as ubiquitous and high tech as forks.
That’s possible. While on A Strange New Pod’s twitch stream (I recommend them for people looking for positive and critical discussion of all things Trek) covering the episode last night I had something along the same thought, that perhaps Robert could have misinterpreted Maurice’s reasoning for not having replicators, or maybe a transporter, in their home, as those could have posed too great a risk of self harm to be available to Yvette.
I am quite aware of all of this. Largely because I serve low income. And yes, while I am aware there is some support for people on low income, you have to realize that most people are not really aware of it, and potentially, the QUALITY of the said help would be questionable at best (or they would be pretty swamped and not able to SEE people in the first place because of long waiting lines)... and there could also be a 'stigma' for many in seeking help for mental health issues (because a lot of people erroneously think that they would somehow be 'weak' if they ask for it).
One of the big aspects of mental health that many don't realize is that while we may look at it as an illness, sometimes to them this is just their normal every day experience, i.e. they feel everyone experiences these voices, or mood swings. So, any treatment doesn't always feel right, resulting in noncompliance. In Yvette's case, she may have not even noticed her condition until it started affecting her (especially if she hadn't been going for annual or frequent medical checkups - on starships, crews do an equivalent of a medical checkup per month or year - perhaps even on a weekly basis if its deemed necessary), and by the time she had, her judgment would have been impaired by it and she decided not to get treatment, which also le
The future must worry about viruses so much as to revert to generating many seemingly superfluous read-only devices, each of which would have cost a consumer thousands during the resource scarcity era.
Trek is quite dumb, then. I blame TNG.That said, for a PADD in Trek to not being able to contain multiple documents is quite simply dumb.
I think she was just Soongs motivation rather than a character with a storyline.Oops, forgot about Kore. Even more stuff they gotta resolve in a single episode somehow, unless her walking out into the woods was the end of the plot line...
