Missed Opportunities That Need Rectified...

Growing up with a veteran who tells stories of no quarter given, whole ships dying. Sure, why not? It's not rational because it is from a skewed historical perspective..

I hate them for the French and Indian War! (My ancestors are from Quebec).

Considering that in the 24th century 140 years is considered a good lifespan for a human, let's say it was 120 in the 23rd century. That makes it quite possible that Lt. Stiles grew up with an older family member that actually served (and survived) in that war and also told him about the deaths of his nephews and uncles.

That is honestly my expectation. It isn't just studying in books but talking and hearing from somebody who was there.

Without getting too political, I think it's fair to say that some living Americans still haven't gotten over losing the Civil War . . . .

Not to derail the thread or anything, but just to cite another example of people having strong feelings about a war fought before their time. And there are plenty of non-American examples as well.

It's simple. Nothing of note happened between ca 2290-2364.

I mean, Praxis exploding, Gorkon getting assassinated, the Federation president's attempted assassination, Kirk and McCoy's trial, the Enterprise crew's retirement, the first Khitomer Conference, the launch of the Enterprise B and Kirk getting sucked into the nexus all happened in 2293...

Then there were border wars with Cardassia...and their annexation of Bajor.

Picard's captaincy of the Stargazer.

Raids by Talarians and the like.

War with the Tzinkethi.

The Romulan attack on Khitomer, orphaning Worf, destroying the Enterprise C and leading to the second Khitomer Conference.

All the stuff in the Lost Era novels and comics and such...

Only two things come to mind.

1.Live action M’Ress

Nothing was done in the TOS movies to have even a cameo, although they had a few male Caitians in the background. But something could be do in Star Trek 4, as we’ve seen Caitians before in STID. As a student of Uhura

2. Unused ideas surrounding the Romulans

There are so many ideas regarding Romulan that have been either left on the cutting rom floor, left to beat canon, left unused, or not explored futher

  • 22nd century Romulan BoP & drones with Romulan bird markings on hull and with red plasma torpedoes
  • Drones controlled by AI (unused ST XI script)
  • Romulans attack Earth on the day Starfleet broke the warp 7 barrier (unused ST XI script)
  • Want to exterminate the Vulcans (unused ST XI script)
  • Arrest of Admiral Valdore (ENT deleted scene)
  • Connection of Gamma Hydra and Taurean systems to Romulan history (TAS & NEM)
  • Disappearing earth freighters/Sending earth freighters into the sun (ENT novels)
  • Vendorians used as spies by the Romulans (TAS)
  • Romulan philosopher S’task (beta canon)
  • TSFS – Honourable Romulans that were more trustworthy than Klingons, Romulan Kruge (basically the same mannerisms, including Kruge killing David when attempting to kill Saavik on Genesis, and destroying Valkirs’s ship), interested in mining the Genesis planet, Romulans board the Enterprise as it self destructs while Starfleet officers capture a Romulan ship and travel back in time
  • Romulans facing down a Borg scout ship and winning despite losing all their ships (TNG: The Neutral Zone)
  • Special commando shock troops that destroyed a senator’s district and were desensitized to violence compared to the average Romulan centurion who are troubled at harming all civilian life (Unification novelization)
  • Romulans attack ensigns at the Amargosa observatory (GEN)
  • Romulans as the occupiers of Bajor (DS9)
  • Romulans conspiring with Starfleet admirals (INS)
  • Starfleet battle group Omega fighting Romulans in the Bassen Rift (NEM)
  • Centarian slugs being native to Romulus (ST’09)
  • Romulans connected to the Xindi attack on Earth (ENT)
  • destroy the Klingons and almost wipe out the Federation; in an alliance with the Vulcans (unused "Yesterday's Enterprise" script)

Strange New Worlds seems like the best place to explore and encompass all of these unused ideas or concepts in a standalone or two part episode.

Perhaps the plot is the Enterprise answers a distress call near Gamma Hydra IV and beam aboard a Vendorian in human form, and Spock does a mind meld and learns about life on the Romulan side of the Neutral Zone. And we end up learning who the Romulans have become within this 100-year period between 2161 and 2261. And we see them engaged in brutal occupations of less powerful worlds, historically involved in conspiracies with higher ups in Starfleet and the Xindi Council, and the general turmoil within the Romulan Empire that resulted in the aftermath of the Earth-Romulan War.

And by keeping these events as something only for Spock to see, it does not contradict “Balance of Terror” later on, and helps him to understand why some humans still hold a grudge towards Romulans 100 years later. And having a Vendorian be the recipient of a mind meld creates question as to whether these events genuinely happened or are a deception created by the Vendorian.

What things do you think should've made it to the screen that you think producers missed out on? Do you think they can be rectified in the current Trek productions?

My biggest missed opportunity comes from TOS, TAS and the TOS movies, and that is Uhura not getting to sit in the captain's chair. There were numerous opportunities in TOS for it to happen, and I guess the timing wasn't right. Uhura did take command of the Enterprise in "The Lorelei Signal" (TAS) but they didn't actually put her in the captain's chair.

Do I think they can rectify it? Either Star Trek 4 or Strange New Worlds will have to opportunity to put her in the captain's chair, I hope they take advantage of it.
I haven't seen this episode but saw the clip on Youtube where it says she takes command and just assumed it would be a given she sat in the chair in the episode!

For me it was doing nothing but Beyond for the 50th Anniversary. Maybe I was expecting too much based on Doctor Who though.
This one might not have been feasible and I don't have all the information but if it's true that after they shut down Trek in 2005 and took all the sets out into the carpark and ran them over with forklifts and threw them in the skip bin, then maybe they could have called some blokes to come rescue them. I guess it's easier said than done though.
I guess these can't be rectified, sorry I missed the point of the post!

The 20th century humans lifted from their hells into 23rd/24th century life never got explored the moment the end credits rolled. The while biologist, the music dude, the financial dude, the homemaker...

Granted, seeing them in bliss all day makes for little-compelling drama unless it's an X-rated thing, and seeing them go nuts over being unable to adjust to the 24th century would be the sort of comedic tragedy that Shakespeare seemed to enjoy...

Or what happened to people given asylum like Alexander. Though they would be given happy endings.

Or Shahna and that planet Oxmyx ruled. Kirk returns, finds the Providers kept their word but Shahna still hates it, or hates more what it became so he grants her and others asylum after an hour of whatever (or a 6-part extravaganza, it's all good.) The Providers kept their word but the Thralls didn't... As for Oxmyx and co, that would be an easy one to deal with for any number of sequel fodder.

This is also "small universe syndrome", but there ARE times when some stories (which may or may not be perfect) have endings that CAN lead to a follow-up that's dramatic gold. Not all sequels are bad...

As a kid I just took it for granted Catherine Hicks just got a spaceship and flew away. But as an adult I wonder why they didn't the only woman who knew about humpback whales in the 24th century didn't stick around. Unless science vessel means a naval ship. Actually that's probably it.

In the book, Gillian's ship was off to Mer to recruit some water breathing divers. Presumably, it would return to Earth, where it would monitor the whales from orbit. Also, Starfleet intended to use frozen tissue samples to clone more humpbacks, because you can't repopulate a species with only three* individuals.

*Gracie is pregnant.

That's what the novels are for . . . . :)

Seriously, these sort of loose ends are catnip for us tie-in writers. And many of the characters and planets you mentioned have been further explored in assorted books and comics.

But even in the novelverse, we still have yet to find out what ever happened with the Morgs and Eymorgs. Talk about missed opportunities. ;)

The whale biologist shows up in a comic, the "financial guy" shows up in a novel in which he has become the Federation ambassador to the Ferengi Alliance.

The latter is DEBTOR'S PLANET by W. R. Thompson, I believe.

(Offenhouse also pops up in one of my Eugenics Wars books, prior to his long hibernation.)
