Just out of curiosity, how many people that are totally on board with throwing in something teeny tiny, that needed zero explanation, like Spock’s family name were/are totally against Enterprise explaining why Klingons in TOS look the way they do? If you hate the Klingon issue, why give a pass to Spock.
Because for me, it’s a very similar type deal with the major difference being, the look of Klingons was something you actually saw and was commented on in another series. Spock’s name was something the 98% of the fan base either didn’t know, didn’t remember or didn’t care about.
me personally, I don’t care. Giving Spock another name isn’t going to hamper my enjoyment of the show (assuming it lives up to the hype) in the least bit. Just like the creative way they explained TOS Klingons didn’t ruin a very good final season of Enterprise.
As for M’Benga, I’m all for it. The character was such a blank slate mining stuff from novels is actually a great idea.

Because we know Spock has a first name. We just never knew what it was.
The state purpose of Klingons from TOS to TMP changing was to treat it as it always looked like that. Now, we get 20 different make up styles and a demand for an explanation for each. That's no longer entertainment; that's research.

No wonder people are mad at the potential of an official answer. It ruins precious pet theories.
I never had a pet theory, beyond what DC Fontana wrote for "This Side of Paradise", that Spock had an unpronounceable first name.
It was simply something that never needed to go beyond that.
IIRC, it was DC Fontana, in reaction to fan requests for Spock's other name, who randomly hit the keys "Xtmprszntwlfd" on her typewriter. This was then preserved in the "USS Enterprise Officer's Manual".
Perhaps an intern got carried away on Memory Beta? It's the wrong Enterprise ('09 version) up there too after all.
