I was a huge fan of the original; used to watch the repeats of it during the summer when it would come at midnight every weeknight (after Star Trek TOS). I'm real curious if this new series will manage to contain the zaniness of the original.
Yeah, if it's not debuting until 22022... well, I know I'm not sticking around for it. In all seriousness, I'm doubtful they can capture what made the original show so much fun, but I hope they're successful.
With Harry Anderson, Charles Robinson and Markie Post gone, any interest I might have had in this is nil. I hope they at least get a mention as having moved on to other careers.
It's been 30 years -- it's reasonable to assume they've retired by now. Although they might be established as having passed away, as a tribute to their actors. The original series went through plenty of cast changes, with Harry, Dan, and Bull being the only ones to last through all nine seasons. What defined it for me was its particular style of comedy, that wacky, cartoonish, anything-goes universe it inhabited. My concern is whether they can recapture that voice, or create something equivalent to it, without the original creative team.
Night Court is on my list of all-time favorite TV shows but I'm not sure how I feel about this. Is Larroquette the only returning cast member? I'll give it a shot unless it's only on a streaming service, but sometimes when they revive these old shows you definitely get a feeling of 'you can't go home again'. I think the tone of the show is going to be very different.
Apparently so. I'm hoping we might get a guest appearance by Richard Moll or Marsha Warfield, or a recurring cast member like Will Utay or even Brent Spiner, but none have been announced yet.
Out of all the characters Dan was easily the one with the most ambition; having run for higher office early in the series. I find it hard to believe he's been a prosecutor in the same court for 30+ years. He would have been the first to leave. Harry, I think, would have stayed on the bench until retirement.
Wikipedia says that India de Beaufort is playing the prosecutor, replacing a different actress in the pilot (well, that much is authentic). Maybe she's Dan's assistant and he's the DA, but maybe he's moved on to something else. As for his ambition, he repented his selfish ways and reformed as a person late in the series, so maybe that explains it.
Interestingly enough, NYS has a mandatory retirement age for judges (age 70), but not DAs. So, if we assume Harry Stone was the same age as Harry Anderson (a reasonably safe assumption), Harry would, in fact, probably be off the bench or about to leave. As for Dan, between Fielding's propensity for high living and get rich quick schemes, coupled with his in court demeanor, I suppose it's not at all outside the realm of possibility that he never succeeded at a run for higher office and can't afford to retire. If anything, he's lucky he wasn't Me'tooed into unemployment and disbarment.
I wonder if any attempt will be made to explain what happened after the final episode of the series. Christine was elected to Congress and Dan decided to leave the court and follow her to Washington. Was he successful? Did they actually marry and then later divorce? Or will the series choose to ignore these events?
After Christine was elected, she was forced to resign after getting caught jumping up and down on the Lincoln bed with a TV producer/donor.
A steadily working actor getting a TV gig at his age doesn't seem like much reason to throw a pity party. I assume he's being compensated nicely enough.
