Also, the 100 years leading upto FC are chaotic, so hardly anyone knows about them? Seems a bit unlikely with so much digital info and everyone and everything being aired out on social media. How would all this info get lost, even with a nuclear war?
.

One of the big side-effects of nuclear detonations is EMP- electromagnetic pulse. In fact, EMP is a weapon unto itself, with countries tweaking some nuclear weapons specifically for EMP effects and designed to be detonated at high altitude for maximum effect. Essentially, anything with a solid state computer chip in it is FRIED unless it sits in some sort of Faraday cage or is otherwise hardened. So, a nuclear war in a society that stores almost all of its knowledge/records digitally is going to eradicate TONS of information and data.

I thought the same thing. It was also clumsy when Seven said they can't just beam Rios out in front of all the detainees because it could alter the timeline. What?! Raffi and Seven just beamed out of the police car in front of all the cops!

Yep. Big cringy eyeroll from me also on this point.

Movie Night on Enterprise.

Nothing past 1965.

It was good. One thing that seems to be working well for me is the pacing. It's episode 5, the halfway point, and things seem to be unfolding at a good clip. Lots of questions still, but that's ok at this point. One thing I'm curious about is Q. By the end of TNG he was not so much a "villain" as he was a thorn in the side that was ultimately almost helpful. He seems much more "evil" here. I hope this is explained and if I'm honest I think it would be kind of a bummer to have him be just plain bad. I hope there's more to it.

Not an attempt to derail the thread- just a quick side note.

People think nuclear weapons hitting cities is the biggest threat they pose- it's not. you can kill an entire continent with 2 or 3 well placed high altitude EMP bursts. Check out the book One Second After by William Forstchen if you want to read a scientifically researched, totally plausible doomsday scenario.

Something that just came back to me: When NotSoji asked Soong about her mother, he briefly/ uneasily hesitated. Hmmmm... Is she an android already? Something's not right about mommy, in any case, or about the story Soong told his daughter.

And I'd personally rather not imagine nuclear war right now.

Also, Q has been underused in this show. When he said something about only being free when you don't love (shoutout to Ms Q or Jean-Luc), I thought that echoed Seven's so-called commitment issues (to which I say: Run, Seven, run!). Connection seems to be a recurring theme this season (and very literally, with the BQ and Jurati).

Also also, could it be they are using Renée's story to explore intergenerational/ epigenetic trauma up to Picard? That'd be interesting.

If they're following continuity, the Soong Family would be focused on Genetic Engineering, not Androids. (based on Enterprise). It's possible that his daughter is a genetically engineered test-tube baby that has genetic definiciencies from his work. Work he wants to to progress with making more (and leading into WWIII).

From a storyline point of view, if Q is actively interfering and Picard and Crew are the cause (as implied in Episode 2), it's possible, but unlikely, that Q is trying to proactively prevent the changes to the timeline they cause.

Anyway, this episode was much better than the previous one, so I gave it an 8.
Electronic files are actually very fragile. I can easily see a lot of it lost.

The EMP effect of nuclear detonations is vastly overstated in media. Realistically significant pulses only occur under specific circumstances. As well, most critical infrastructure is hardened against EMP and government critical infrastructure is basically immune to it. Where it would do the most damage is unshielded consumer electronics, but as for data loss most of larger corporations' data centers are shielded.

Why is Picard treated as such a dottering old man sometimes for the benefit of explaining things to the audience? I mean, the woman is clearly *not* and cannot be Laris? So why does he keep talking to her like she is?
It's Human nature. People do say something like that when encountering someone they thought were someone else... I know there are times when characters say things for the benefit of the viewers, like Decker's line about "what was known as a black hole" in TMP. I don't think this was such an example.

Considering Carl Sagan's statement about how humans are "star stuff", I almost wonder if Q's line about being the "evolution of stardust" points to humans eventually evolving into Q?
I think it's just a line.

Why? Many families have some kind of history where a parent would be hesitant to speak about the other parent to their child.

I enjoyed it. I wonder if there was a purpose behind Rios' subplot or it was an utter waste of time and money. Maybe that guy Rios befriended in the end would show up, or turn up in a historical file when they get back to the 25th like Gabriel Bell's with Sisko's face at the end of Past Tense.

Another thing I thought of. This Q could be from an earlier point in time than the Q who visited Picard. He might have tried to fix the timeline himself, figued out he couldn't, and saves Picard and crew to make sure things work out the way he wants.

Again, unlikely Q is so noble, but I figure I'd say it, in case I'm right.

Good point. But Alton Soong could always have modeled the androids after his ancestor. OR, what if the female family members all look alike, just as the male ancestors do?!
