Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I dunno, I'm Greek and I've not see that show of hers, BUT, I have heard a lot about how her casting in Who was a departure for her seeing as how she is a comedian and had a show called The Catherine Tate Show and all that, featuring characters like this old lady and a schoolgirl, among others. I'd never known, but I learned of it, and only barely, through this show.

So ya know. Not with effort.

Maybe not a lot. But it doesn't seem wildly unlikely that the small minority of people in the US who watch Doctor Who might have a little more knowledge about British pop culture and the backgrounds of people who star on the show than the average American.

Doctor Who is a sci fi show that, while it has comedic moments/stories, isn't really a comedy. The audience crossover between Doctor Who and The Catherine Tate show, at least in the US, is probably almost non existent, unless the person in question saw Tate on Doctor Who and liked her enough to seek her other work out.

Why would enjoying one British show make a non Brit watch random British shows? Watching Doctor Who didn't make me want to watch non-DW related British TV, and even if it did I'd probably watch something like Blakes 7 or Red Dwarf, which are shows I could see easily having crossover audiences with Doctor Who.

I don't generally look into the history of the companions actors, especially not for one who was on and left the show before I was watching the show (I started watching Doctor Who regularly in 2013, starting with Rose until I got caught up a bit before the 50th anniversary aired). Heck, I can't even tell you the names of the actors who played some of the companions (like Martha, Nardole, Bill or any of 12's companions), and I basically have no idea where any of the NuWho companions came from, except that I vaguely recall seeing Nardole's actor's face on a Cg creature in the awful live action Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland.

I just generally don't look into the pasts of the companion actors, it doesn't really occur to me to do so

I can't speak for everyone, but here's how it worked for this American:
::Catherine Tate shows up at the end of Doomsday::
Some Brits in this very forum: "Oh no, not Catherine Tate, she's so loud and obnoxious and not funny."
Other Brits in this very forum: "Oh she's hilarious! I love her!"
Me: "Welp, I guess I need to go to YouTube and IMDB and find out who this Catherine Tate person is."
Me, later: "Oh, so she's a sketch comedienne who does characters. Cool. Hope she's good on Doctor Who."

Rinse and repeat similar experiences for Peter Capaldi, Bradley Walsh, John Bishop, Simon Pegg (It was 2005 and I hadn't seen Shaun of the Dead yet), etc.

When was Pegg on Dr Who?
Doctor Who has a large american audience, as much as any popular american-made show. At least as popular as any 90's-00's Trek shows.
The fact that US premiers were booked solid, and US filming of DW drew huge crowds of bystanders....yeah it's not some "niche british show" here anymore.

Matt Lucas is a well known british comedian and was absolutely perfect as Nardole.

I know more about British celebrities from the parody show "8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown" than anything else. Which doesn't help much in the Doctor Who world lol

So, Hugh Grant confirmed as the next Doctor, how exciting!

Here's a fun trip down memory lane of the tabloids getting it wrong/straight-up lying.

Looking at the betting odds for the first time in months Lydia West is still the favourite*, which would be good for me as while I'm not a gambler I did put some money down on her when the odds were much higher(lower?)

*Technically it's Tennant but that's even more bollocks than being Hugh. Not least because he's doing a Jekyll and Hyde show in the US and I think there's (somehow) going to be another series of ATWI80D as well.
