Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I mean, I honestly thought that she'd either had major health problems or was a lot older then I thought she was after seeing that image. As a US fan of Doctor Who, I have no idea what Catherine Tate has done outside of Doctor Who, and no reason to think she'd be randomly in make up in a pic where Tennant is not dressed oddly to match her. Apparently its some character she plays, but I had no idea she played weird comedic characters. I wasn't even aware she was a comedian

This isn't a knock against her, I liked Donna in Doctor Who, but its definitely not common knowledge outside of the UK that she has some weird character she puts on make up to play, which makes that image really weird when you don't have the context, even though I'm sure people familiar with her in the UK would get the context immediately.

Hit YouTube.
Her “Nan” character is an astonishingly accurate portrayal of real people xD

It's still very weird that they've made a Nan film now. I know it was filmed before the pandemic but even as originally planned it would have been 5 years after we last saw the character on TV. Then again they bought Nan back for the specials 7 or 8 years after the Catherine Tate show finished.

Just how old is Nan supposed to be now?

I would say abou 89

Sounds like a "YOU" problem. I don't think you can speak for "Common Knowledge". YOU have never seen her other characters (Nan, Lauren Cooper, et al). A lot of us have.

I found her unbearable in The Runaway Bride but a little less annoying in season 4. Overall, she's my least favorite companion of the new series and I have no great desire to see her return.

How many people in the US do you think know about Catherine Tate? Looking at her imdb, outside of Doctor Who at most she might be remembered as someone who made some appearances in the US version of The Office, but even fans of that show probably wouldn't necessarily know the actress's name or her other work.

Not all British TV makes it big in the US, for every Doctor Who or Downton Abby there is probably 100 obscure shows that, at most, get shoved to 8pm on Saturday on PBS or get weird budget DVD releases that are only bought by people who really enjoy British shows. This goes double for British comedy that isn't Monty Python or Mr. Bean related.

This isn't a knock against Tate, most British comedians don't get much stuff shown in the US nowadays, but you have no fucking idea what you're talking about if you expect any random person in the US to know who the fuck Nan is, or to have any knowledge of Tate's career outside of DW or The Office.

I never thought I'd be on the same page as @kirk55555, but that image initially had me fooled/confused as well until I did some research and edited my post accordingly.

It's not as obvious that the image posted is of Catherine Tate as one of her many sketch comedy characters as some people here think it is.

You mean apart from the characters “name” being on the wallpaper behind her?
It’s just a careful attention situation, and is not really that big of a deal tbh.

Clearly you posted an image response to me, but I'm not seeing it @kirk55555. Case in point:

What was it?

Thats weird. I didn't post a pic, I just quoted your post which had a picture, and then added Photoman's quote under it because I was responding to both posts.

I think what happened is that I added an extra space after your quote, and then added a space again before adding the next quote. So, just some unintentionally weird formatting from me.

I usually find myself knowing a bit about all sorts of stuff so I saw her comedy bits years ago.
These were the top 3 skits that I saw her from.

It's trivial knowledge but at least I can say I'm familiar with her.

I was glad she got to do some work with the US "Office" I was able to say to myself "Hey I know her! She was on Doctor Who"

Indeed. I liked her a lot in Who, and was dismayed when I saw the initial post without context. Frustratingly so.

How many people in the US do you think know about Catherine Tate? .

Maybe not a lot. But it doesn't seem wildly unlikely that the small minority of people in the US who watch Doctor Who might have a little more knowledge about British pop culture and the backgrounds of people who star on the show than the average American.
