Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Yup. Made me look twice.

Unfortunately, Fortnite is the new marketing tool.

I’m ok with that, I’ve “been” at loads of events. Just not sure I think it suits Who. But… if you’re gonna grab the kids, and god knows FN has the multiverse crack story to help, I guess it’s the way to go.

I mean, I don't think it is appropriate at all. The first representation of a Mistborn character was in Fortnite. That's just...no. Wrong. Dr. Who is a similar thing to me. It's just dumb.

I mean, it was a joke. You do know about those, right?

This is what she really looks like now.

The Mirror are saying Hugh Grant is in the frame to be 14. Obviously take with a HUGE pinch of salt (especially considering the article can't even get the basics right, the show came back in 2007 apparently!) but RTD did consider him before Eccleston and obviously he did (briefly) play the Doctor in The Curse of Fatal Death. He's proven in the last few years that there's more to him than the Fop/Cad roles that dominated his early career. In recent years he's played a disgraced gay MP, a hammy actor/criminal and a psychopathic murderer. He can do serious and silly, has genuine gravitas and screen presence. On the downside it's not the most progressive move to go for another white guy, who knows how long he'd commit to the role for, and at 61 he'd be the oldest Doctor ever.

Also, he said he regretted not taking the role, which is something the Mirror is obviously trying to build on.

I would be very surprised if this was true.

Not that I want to sound like one of Those Guys, but I would be very surprised if a white male were cast. And someone who is 61 I am especially skeptical, not the least because we've had younger guys like Tennant and Smith talk about how physically exhausting the role can be.

Well, there is that internet rumor that there's gonna be three specials leading into the 60th that would feature splinters of the Doctor's 14th incarnation before they'll all just unify into the "ultimate" 14th Doctor in the anniversary, after which a new series would start. And Hugh Grant was gonna be one of the splinter 14's.

But ya know.

I could see that happening. But I'm still pretty skeptical.

Casting Hugh Grant as the Doctor would be a massive admission of failure.

As mentioned, if they're not introducing the real next Doctor in the 60th Anniversary, casting a bunch of famous names for a one off story (a serious Curse of Fatal Death so to speak) could work.

Would be fantastic if they brought back Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, and Joanna Lumley to do (somewhat) serious takes on The Doctor in such a scenario.

They would have to bring back Julia Sawalha and Jonathan Pryce, too.

Damn.

I'm going to be really disappointed when this doesn't happen.

All these rumors up to and including Hugh Grant are just fans trotting out all the top names they know and bonus points if they have some connection with RTD! Take with a huge pinch of salt. However . . .

While I'm firmly against the Timeless Child, one "benefit" of having a potentially inexhaustible supply of pre-Hartnell Doctors is that they can have one-off specials or movies with big names, such as Grant.

The three splinters idea seems to be a retread of the previous Chibnall idea that was apparently dropped and then brought back in The Flux. Doubting that RTD would use it.

It’s a great promo picture, because people know she plays that character. Honestly. It’s not a pic for “Doctor Who: Return of Donna, Please Come Back Audience, We Screwed The Pooch.”

I mean, I honestly thought that she'd either had major health problems or was a lot older then I thought she was after seeing that image. As a US fan of Doctor Who, I have no idea what Catherine Tate has done outside of Doctor Who, and no reason to think she'd be randomly in make up in a pic where Tennant is not dressed oddly to match her. Apparently its some character she plays, but I had no idea she played weird comedic characters. I wasn't even aware she was a comedian

This isn't a knock against her, I liked Donna in Doctor Who, but its definitely not common knowledge outside of the UK that she has some weird character she puts on make up to play, which makes that image really weird when you don't have the context, even though I'm sure people familiar with her in the UK would get the context immediately.
