Random Thoughts...or...What's on Your Mind?

Happy St. Patrick's Day.

That's the reason one of my mates gave (dropped pavements for drive ways etc)
Speaking of sidewalks that cross driveways, it is not uncommon–in my neighborhood anyway–for the tail end of a car or pickup to be parked over said sidewalk, obstructing the way.

That's a little less common here, but when looking for a new car, I did check one that I liked but that would have stuck a couple of feet out of our path (and would have been a bit too long for some of the parking bays near us).

My mom and I discovered a really cool new sound the last couple times we were out hiking in the desert, a strong wind going over a Saguaro Cactus. It makes a really cool, almost kinda creepy hissing noise, especially if it's one that a little more dried out, because then it sucks in and gets really deep grooves. There were a bunch out where we were hiking today, and a couple times just stopped for a few seconds and listened.
Also turns out all of these bike rides, and hikes have paid off. I had a doctor's appointment yesterday, and I've gone from around 150lbs a few months ago, to 136lbs.

I just read that fantasy author Brandon Sanderson did a Kickstarter, and raised $30,000,000, and it brought up something that's kinda bothered me in the past. I don't understand why popular, successful people like Sanderson use things like Kickstarter for their projects. I thought the whole point of crowdfunding was for the small projects from unknown creators who are wouldn't be able to get the money they need for their work any other way.

that's not entirely correct. a traditional venture capitalist owns you and can run you into bankrupcy (happened to a couple of people i know) - kickstarter doesn't do that.

it also looks like he uses it as a clever way to just sell his books and swag boxes - i wonder what his publisher thinks of that but brandon sanderson certainly keeps a bigger share of his work's proceeds as he can simply hire out printing and distribution.

edit to add:

it's especially a way to avoid amazon getting their greasy fingers into his sales

When the internet was new, I remember homophobes whining and complaining that a gay man was cast as Magneto in X-Men. And I was like, how are you even an X-Men fan? I feel like the same thing is happening with Star Trek right now after that Discovery cameo.

that Discovery cameo

Speaking as a Canadian... when watching the show, it felt like they were building to a "reveal" in that scene, but then when we did see the person in question... I didn't recognize them at all. So I assumed I just misread the intent, and it wasn't really intended to be a big deal.

Then when I was online later that night, I found out who it was. I vaguely recognized the name, but wasn't really familiar with them, so I did a bit of reading. Now with the benefit of some background knowledge, I can say that it definitely seems like an appropriate choice! :techman:
