But it has nothing in common with any of the 24th Century ships. It's too rugged and blocky. To me it looks like a ship that would fit right in with the fleet from First Contact.

Storyboards are hardly definitive, unless you also believe that the Picard production team legitimately thought a few Nova-class ships was a viable threat to a Romulan war fleet?

Prove it. Looks like they're just sketching in placeholders to me.None of that matters. The point was that the person making that storyboard used a design that they thought was contemporary to the time period.

Kind of an unfair comparison though since Disco S1 ships were deliberately designed not to fit in to TOS continuity, then smooshed in when they decided to go all Shared Universe. PIC ships are designed to fit in from the get-go.You’re entitled to your opinion. To me it looks like a ship that would fit right in with the fleet from First Contact. The miniscule features that it has in common with the other DSC season 1 ships pales in comparison to the more advanced rest of the design. They even used it for storyboarding in PIC along with the Nova class. So clearly I’m not the only one who thinks this.

It honestly doesn't, the artist probably just grabbed random ships they had on hand. They're placeholder, they were never intended to be used.clearly shows their line of thought about the design.
I don’t need to prove it. It’s right there in front of you. The ‘placeholders’ could have just been generic shapes. The fact that they specifically used a fleet of Nova classes along with Shepard classes (which they already had the production assets for from DSC) clearly shows their line of thought about the design.

So:
Cardenas > Radiant > Constellation > ...?...>Sagan?
Works for me!
True, the TNG Era had several different design languages happening at once.
And I liked it that way. The continual Eaves-ification of Starfleet starts to get boring IMO.True, the TNG Era had several different design languages happening at once.
or ..
I do like that TOS-era Stargazer design! But I can't help but wonder if it should have been a Cardenas-class?
![]()
Maybe the issue is that the Cardenas looked too advanced compared to the Constellation...![]()
I never caught up on Discovery, so what was the fate of the Buran, and Earth Prime Lorca for that mater? The Cardenas-class is a pre-TOS ship. Lorca's command before Discovery was the Cardenas-class USS Buran.
.
...But as Discovery already introduced a mid-23rd Century four-nacelled ship I'm just curious as to why they didn't make a previous Stargazer one, especially as it would have given them the opportunity to add a new tie between Picard and Discovery.
Here's another take on a TOS era "Cardenas". Looks fantastic. The Cardenas-class is a pre-TOS ship.....
Don't get me wrong, I love the old-school simplified TOS style
