Did they really decide that El-Aurians can age at will to fit in?
yes.

Is that going to ruin the chances of Guinan showing up on Discovery?
not necessarily: she can just decide to stop aging for some 800 years. That said, I really don’t think we’ll see her on discovery.

Geez...Excelsior class starships are still in service?
they surely were and considered viable 25 years earlier, with one of them, properly refitted, being able to engage the defiant in battle, so why not?

An Earth Quake half way through WWIII?

That's just insane?
As insane as risking ww3 in the middle of a pandemic.
Is that Guinan's entire appearance in this season?
I really think she will show up in the alternate timeline as well.

So what do people think happened at the end?

Possibility 1: The Stargazer self-destructed and Q rescued Picard to give him a second chance. Q pulled Picard into an alternate timeline to show him a "what if" of his life.
Possibility 2: The Borg disabled the self-destruct. The Borg needed power for that energy wave we see. The energy wave rewrote time. Q simply showed up in the alternate timeline to help Picard.

I lean towards option #2.

I agree the scene where they refused to stop shooting after Rios ordered them to stop was poorly done. Obviously they don’t teach them the chain of command like they used to.
I also want a fan of all those stairs on the bridge. Seems like a health hazard.

In defense of the guys ignoring direct orders, the chain of command in Star Trek has always been about as strong as overcooked spaghetti. Sort of like the Prime Directive which seems to really be how to order one's steak.

I like the idea that the Borg adapted to their defeat in Endgame by learning to be emotionally manipulative. Though it's really unclear now why they wanted Picard specifically unless that was also part of Q's game.

My read is definitely 1#.

However, it comes with the caveat that the Borg were not trying to attack but were attempting to merge to share the information they had accumulated. Also, these are the Borg from Fascist Universe not the Borg from Federation universe. It's just they want to join the Federation of this universe. Sort of like if people went to the Mirror Universe to join the Terran Empire.

Yes, especially since future Janeway emotionally manipulated the Borg Queen in Endgame if I am remembering it right.

Perhaps it relates to the alternate timeline. Perhaps the Picard of the totalitarian timeline is responsible for destroying the Borg (we see the painting of the alt-Enterprise in a battle against the Borg). These Borg know that "our" Picard will be more sympathetic to helping them (he refused to use Hugh as a weapon against the Borg). So they think they can appeal to "our" Picard to help against the totalitarian Picard.

These Borg seem to be much-much nicer and have a sense of aesthetics. Which is the biggest realization they are not "our" Borg. If the Borg can appreciate beauty then they are a fundamentally different race on a primal level.

And yes, my idea is that Q is actually not responsible for Fascist Earth but has sent Picard to help "save" this universe.

It will be a reveal that he's helping the Borg of this universe. Q has either changed or always been a lot nicer than his Satanic persona suggests (ruthless as he may be).

I didn't know about fascist Earth, I haven't been watching trailers, that's kind of a spoiler for me.

It's funny how they had to explain the ages of two different characters who aren't supposed to age in this episode. Guinan "Oh I chose to age because immortality makes humans uncomfortable!"

It was one part fog of war making it difficult to hear, one part "Holy shit, Borg, kill it!" understandable reflexive reaction, and one part more people piling in from the turbolift who had not yet heard the order to cease fire.

No OSHA in the future.
