Overall, I thought this was a great first episode and as I expected they would when it was announced Terry Matalas was taking over as showrunner, it seems to be a bit of a reboot somewhat ignoring some of things fans weren't happy with during the first season. This seems more of a love song to TNG and to "Berman era" of Star Trek rather than a darker reinterpretation. I'm really curious to know what this new Borg Queen is all about and what Q is up to. The low point for me of the episode is the Picard/Laris story line as it honestly felt a bit forced. Killing Zhaban off was a bit too easy and obvious and I actually loved Zhaban/Laris as a pair last season. It just seems out of the blue that suddenly Laris is pining for Picard because this was never obvious in the first season. Also I have a hard time with the idea that Picard ran away from real love. His relationship with Vash, and the piano playing woman (whose name escapes me) ended because they moved on not Picard. And Beverly was the one who didn't want to pursue a relationship at the end of "Attached."

Very nice overall, although I really hope it doesn't "fall apart" like Season 1 felt like it did. That started with a great first episode (or few episodes) too.
But grr, no mention of Beverly Crusher by name - do you think she was the one who really got away/was let go in his conversation with Guinan?

100% agree that it's odd, and somewhat annoying, that Beverly has not had a single mention as yet. Beyond her and Picard's romantic undertones, they had been friends for decades and it just seems odd she is no longer involved in her life. I do think Picard's reference to the one that got away was about Beverly and that makes me think she may have re-married. I have a hunch Beverly will be in season 3 in some capacity..
Orla Brady hinted on her IG she is not in season three & in a recent interview Patrick Stewart referred to "actresses" who have played his love interest over seasons 2 and 3 of Picard.

I think folks are missing the fact that it was Laris hitting on Picard, not really the other way around.
Also, She was the one who stated that Romulans grieve their love-loss by wholeheartedly embracing a new one.

Just for the record, Rios never lights the cigar on the Stargazer bridge nor does any smoke ever come out of his mouth and/or nose when he's chewing on it.

My grandpa did the same thing, he wasn't allowed to light it up in the house by "Grandma Decree", so he just mouthed it most of the time.

I think it's pretty clear Picard was meant to have failed here. He sat by passively while a firefight broke out on the bridge, and missed the obvious cues that the Borg Queen was not hostile (only firing once fired upon, and only stunning). Seven's admonishment that Picard should blow up the ship should not have been listened to.

Alternatively, it's possible the Queen sent them back in time, rather than Q doing it.
He wasn't meant to fail, but it wouldn't be a test if it was easy.

And to quote Picard here "Time offers many opportunities, but it rarely offers second chances."

I do like that they wrote that line for her. It helps.

Hedging my early-season bets here - the Borg Queen's got a weird mask on because she's Seven or Jurati.

Don't ask me how.

Don't ask me why.

For the love of god, don't ask me if I like the idea.

But here we are.
My impression was that’s Picard mother. I hope I’m wrong.
And yes, I know we’ll also see a different queen, but the borg seem to have many anyway.
Fking hate that Discovery have done this.
you didn’t know the heroes would save the galaxy already anyway?

Actually I love that they actually mention that she did face a judicial system. As for her joke about it, many people use inappropriate humor to deal with situations they are uncomfortable with. That's very human
And also very Jurati. Totally works for me.
But... is it really that crazy to pass on dating your much younger employee?
is she much younger, though? Romulans age at a much slower pace, she could be 100 for all we know.

Who's been happily married to someone else every time we've seen her?
by the way, did they say in season one they were married? I remembered them as being friends…

Also, fun cameo from the Deltans! That's a race I always thought should pop up more.
ah, they were deltans! Missed that, but it makes sense!

That's not uncommon in real life or in Star Trek. The Admirals usually let the captain's do what they need to do until their input is necessary.
yes, but they disagreed on the course to take and Rios totally ignored picard’s preferred course of action…and Picard just stood there doing nothing.

Glad to see Starfleet keeps its self-destruct countdown codes pretty simple. The ranking officer's name plus the numbers and words from both TOS and TSFS. ;)
and the default countdown is now only 10 seconds! Why have a countdown at all then?!

Well if you notice, he never lights it, it's actually never lit at all in the entire episode. I think it's just a comfort for him, a tick.
I noticed, I still don’t like it.

Being a flag officer doesn't mean he is command of the ship at the time.
of course not, but he is supposedly in command of the fleet and should be the one dictating policies, with the captains and other officers commanding the ships within those policies. Also, apparently any Starfeet admiral can order the self-distruct of any ship, apparently!

Zhaban died a year and a half prior, so more than a year passed. It's just only been a year since the synth ban has ended.
I noticed, either they waited a bit to lift the ban officially (makes sense, politics take time) or Zhaban died while Picard was in space in season one. Still, I feel they should have went with 3/4 years. Especially as it seems really too soon for Elnor to get an assignment.

People don't mourn in the future.
romulans don’t, apparently.

Wow, an episode where things actually happen! After this season of Disco I'd forgotten what that was like.
I stopped watching Discovery a few episodes ago, because it was getting too monotonous and tedious. Just watched this one while I had lunch, and this was phenomenal! We had a build with some disappointing moments in Season 1, but this looks like the TNG follow up I wanted. Going to watch it again tonight for my more detailed watch, but that was really enjoyable.

As a season opener this was absolutely cracking! Apart from a couple of pieces of awkward exposition from Jurati and Guinan the storytelling was really strong, and it totally messed with my expectations from the trailers (in a good way, not a Last Jedi way!)

Plus so much starship porn!

The new Stargazer is gorgeous.

The Luna, Andromeda, Sutherland and Gagarin classes are now canon in live action!

USS Excelsior! (is she an Obena or the original deal?)

SOVEREIGN CLASS for the first time on the small screen!

USS Grissom and USS Hikaru Sulu in dialogue!

Makes up for that fleet scene in the S1 finale in spades.

I totally speculate we're going to see the Odyssey class Enterprise-F later in this season. It's got to happen now.

I've really enjoyed the vast majority of the new Trek shows. Picard season 1 was great, and even better on a rewatch last week. Lower Decks is wonderful, and Prodigy is a revelation. I've enjoyed most of Disco, but have to admit I've really struggled this season.

But this... Damn. I really felt like I was watching my Star Trek. I'll have some constructive thoughts after I've calmed down and maybe watched again, but right now I need to wait until I've wiped the grin off my face!

After everything that's going on lately, I really needed that. Thanks Terry Matalas, can't wait for the rest of the season. :techman:

I noticed that too…actually freezes to check, but I was not 100% sure it was.

I tried labelling, I think these are the classes of the ships in the fleet:

Edit: see below for corrections, the Andromeda is a Ross class, and the lower Luna class is a Reliant class
