New (Old) USS Enterprise

Well I'm hoping you're on the good road to recovery. I've looked at your previous Enterprise and didn't notice anything off with the saucer :)
That's very kind of you! Various plans have their discrepancies and the ones I was using had the lower "bulge" too large. Plus ... this is FUN! LOL! I really love making models of the Enterprise!
Nor did I. But regaining your “muscle memory” for modeling with the Enterprise is a brilliant (and fun!) idea (and FWIW this looks very accurate so far). But however it turns out I hope this project paves your road to recovery. :techman:
Thank you very much, my friend. Your encouragement means a great deal to me!

That is exactly correct. I'm remaking this because of the saucer section.

There is a little more to it. I got hit with COVID-19 twice before there was any prevention. I was even wearing a mask, but it wasn't good enough! I've lost quite a bit of memory because of this. Yep, I'd love it back, but one thing I can do is remake my USS Enterprise to look a little more like the real thing. The texturing process will be ... interesting.

I want to go on and finish what I always wanted to do, make the other ships from the original series. Then I'd love to put in my own effects into some episodes. I presume it will only be for myself, but it will be fun and I can post images here. I really, REALLY didn't care for some of what was done (by CBS, right?) with the reissue with new effects. I'd love some better effects that adhere closer to the original effects which I love.

But thank you ALL for looking in and asking questions! I greatly appreciate your attention and comments! It really does help!
Cool, thanks for explaining, I am a talentless hack so I don't know all that magic you CGI people pull off. ;)

As for Enterprises, I like the classic ones, the TMP ones and a lot of the fanmade ones, some are really well done and look really good. :mallory:

Riiiiiiiight! "Talentless hack"! LOL! Somehow, I don't THINK so!
Oh now @Santaman dont be so hard on yourself.

I don’t think you’re talentless! ;) :D
Ha! Nice.

When it comes to anything that involves creating shapes on paper or on screens I am useless.
The only thing other people say that I'm good at is writing poetry but again, mweh, maybe out of the 700+ I've done a few might be slightly okay.. :vulcan:
Well, if you are a Star Trek fan, perhaps this will help you with learning to model! Take a look if you are interested.

^^ Really nice, I'm not sure I ever can get myself to try it but I just love seeing videos like that and hearing you explain it.:mallory:
I'm a sucker for programs like "How its made" and "How do they do it" and so on.

If you give it a go, let me know. I'd love to see what you make!

Did a little more work today. It might not show as readily apparent, but I'm happy with the progress so far. I am itching to start making textures!

I have noticed that when I compare the plans to some screen captures, the little side green light is too large. It was there during the series, but it was at least half the size, if not even smaller. I'll correct that soon.

I guess no plan is 100% perfect, pick the best bits from all and make the ultimate edition (tm). ;)
Well, there actually is a set of plans that is almost 100% perfect that were put together by Gary Kerr, but I don't have access to those! But you're right! I'll simply make some adjustments as time goes on. Thanks for both looking in and making an excellent comment!

I did a quick look around and indeed no one has gotten his/her hands on those plans, pity.. On the other hand, I would imagine that if you'd laser scan the model of the 1701 you probably would get a lot of little niggles, saucer maybe not entirely round, some stuff being thicker or thinner and it being slightly not symetrical which all is of course how it goes when you build a rather large model like that..
So I guess that what you're doing is actually the way to go, get as close as you can get with what was on screen, think that will give you all kinds of little opportunities to make it a little better than the real physical model ever could be.

I agree with you.

You are absolutely correct. You don't even need to do anything as precise as a laser scan. You can actually see it with the eye. The center line along the top of the saucer ... does NOT align with the center of the three windows at the front of the ship! Weird! Yet, absolutely true. You would think that would have been easy to detect, bit I almost never see anyone else comment on it.
So I guess that what you're doing is actually the way to go, get as close as you can get with what was on screen, think that will give you all kinds of little opportunities to make it a little better than the real physical model ever could be.
Thank you! I think all people who love what they model do about the same thing. We make it the best that we can, we make things as accurate as we can, but we know there will be differences. The important thing is to make it close enough to the original that viewers will recognize what we have modeled.

Besides, I absolutely LOVE to model the USS Enterprise!

Love the Enterprise and your work, too, Eric.

Speaking of some of the model's quirks, I still believe (please send no hate...) that the 11 foot Enterprise Model was built with "some" force perspective in two areas: 1. the back/port nacelle is smaller than the fore/starboard nacelle which in itself is smaller and more tapered than compared to the saucer scale; 2. the engineering hull is slightly smaller in diameter and is also more tapered as compared to the saucer. Undo the force perspective and the Enterprise has bigger and straighter nacelles and the stern/hangar of the ship is longer and bigger in diameter which results more in the TAS Enterprise shape. That said, I still use the shape of the 11 foot model as normal/canon per Gary Kerr's work.

That is VERY kind of you! Thank you for including my work!

Good lord, would people really hate good observations? Making good observations ... that takes skill!

As a kid, I always assumed that all of that was simply part of the ship design. But you're right, it was certainly different in The Animated Series! Good observation!

Still, I try to make mine match as close as I can to the original. Man, I love that model!
