Nudity taboos in Trek

Exhibitionism isn’t the only reason someone might want to be nude. On Betazed it’s totally normalized.

There are two objective reasons to wear clothes. Functional reasons like the cold or needing support, and being worried about the bad behavior of people attracted to you. In the utopian future the second isn’t an issue. And people don’t project taboo related shame onto others so it comes down to personal preference and weather. In warm places nudity is probably normalized.

Near nudity is.

I think it's fairly typical to cover private areas, possibly because for men, their groin regions are extremely vulnerable to injury. You don't want to give a potential attacker a convenient target.

We only hear that they are naked during the wedding ceremony, the rest of the time they presumably wear clothes (and we do see Deanna and Lwaxana wear clothes in those scenes shot in that same damn park in California every planet was shot back then taking place on that area on Betazoid in Menage A Troi)

We had the Lower Decks communal shower scene, which Boimler wasn't a part of because they made him uncomfortable (according to Mariner, at least)
I thought the reason Boimler wasn't in the communal shower scene is because he was still serving on the Titan in that episode?

One other reason why people prefer to be nude is simply comfort. My wife, for example, prefers to be naked as much as possible. (I have never objected to her doing this.) Bras in particular are confining, which I can understand, as having any body part suddenly pushed into a single place must feel uncomfortable. (I've always been a boxers man. Room for... maneuverability is a good thing.)

It's the "WORST KEPT SECRET" that men are vulnerable at the groin area.

EVERYBODY knows about it, knows how to exploit it.

French study suggests younger women should stop wearing bras
The 15-year study involved 330 volunteers between the ages 18 and 35. Researchers measured their breasts using a slide ruler and a caliper and recorded any changes throughout the study period.

Women who did not wear bras had a 7 millimeter lift as measured from their nipples each year. Their breasts were also firmer, and their stretch marks faded. There was also no evidence that the bras helped get rid of back pain.

The researchers believed that wearing bras prevented the growth of breast tissue, which lead to deterioration of the muscles that support the breasts. If you don't wear a bra, the muscles are worked-out more, the findings suggest.

One volunteer, a 28-year-old woman named Capucine said that she hasn't worn a bra in two years. She told France Info that not wearing the underwear has helped her breathe better, stand straighter and have less backpain.

However, not everyone should eschew bras. While he believes the study shows that bras are unnecessary, Roullion said that a 45-year-old mother who has worn a bra her whole life may not see any benefits if she decided to toss her brassiere, because the study did not involve women older than 35 years old.

"It would be dangerous to advise all women to stop wearing their soutien-gorge (bra) as the women involved were not a representative sample of the population," he told the Connextion.

The New York Times reported that the findings have been met with jokes in the French media, including some columnist who have expressed "astonishment" that the study took so long and was still considered as "preliminary" research.

Of course. But even ordinary clothing makes your nuts a good deal harder to hit. I know that from experience.

Also, it's psychological. If you have a body part that's that vulnerable, your natural instinct is to protect it. It's like when I was a kid, I wouldn't wear shorts because I hated skinned knees.

And to protect it. Thus, clothing.

I know, I am just as shocked as you are.
Short of wearing a "Groin Protector" or "Cup", most of your average clothes aren't going to protect your groin from a groin shot.

Trust me, I know. There's no good way to protect it out of wearing specialized "Groin Protector" or "Cups".

Once you get into melee range, it's pretty easy to hit and to down anybody.

As with all combat, it is a matter off odds, not 100% prevention

Men are rarely seem wearing speedos anymore, longer shorts seem to be the thing. And where it used to be the norm for boys to swim shirtless, we now often see their swimsuits including shirts.
Thank God! Hardly any man looks good in a speedo.

More seriously, body consciousness seems to be spreading to some men. One guy I knew wore a shirt while swimming because he was embarrassed. And many people are embarrassed by how they look (like me) or more interested in comfort while swimming or don’t want to deal with comments (negative or positive).

Northern European heritage will do that. I turn red not tan.
My husband is the same. That's why one of my nicknames for him is White Boy. :D

I'm unsurprised. Damn things are uncomfortable, no matter how "high quality" they're supposed to be. Working on my arms & chest are high on my Back-to-the-Gym list as I have no desire for my tits to hit my feet! :techman:

I personally don't care what others think about my body. I go to the beach without a shirt, same water park, not even around the house.
I'm not 6 pack abs.. But I'm comfortable in my body. Not much I can do .. Genetics is what I got.

It's interesting that breasts, a part that our females periodically need to use as part of caring for their young, are considered inappropriate to show. It seems kind of impractical.

Only in certain countries.. Plenty don't care.
I personally don't care, if it's an appropriate place for a guy to be shirtless, women should go ahead.

But also think to a 100+ years ago.. Showing an ankle.. God forbid a midriff was scandalous. Just take a look at historical swimwear. Even guys wore whole suits.

It's a fascinating psychological experience, one that is associated with prudishness but may not be fully that. There is a higher degree of social awareness and the tendency to experience the spotlight effect seems to be more prevalent, coupled with a larger growing background societal anxiety.

I'm glad to hear that! Sadly, I've never felt that way. But I'm working on it. :)
