Paramount/JJ trying another Trek movie (that will probably never get made).

Hollywood Reporter confirmed with cast reps that they had no forwarning that Paramount was going to announce a new Kelvinverse film and were shocked at the news. Posting this here as some posters somehow beloved that Paramount's statement that they had not yet begun negotiations with the cast was downplaying how far along the film was (despite the fact that as this was an investors call such a lie would be fraud, and if Paramount was going to commit fraud on an investor's call it would be to make the film look further into production, not less).

Gee I wonder which posters expressed a hope, and not at all a statement of fact or certainty, as silly as that ;)

But anyway this is bad for Paramount, they just lost a lot of negotiating leverage.

Here's hoping they make progress soon.

I am still hopeful that there is a desire to make the film, such that it will work out. Paramount willing to take a short term hit is actually good.

If the money is right, Pine and the rest will happily come back to make another Star Trek film.

That said: Paramount rarely seems to be able to pony up. What killed the previous attempt at JJ Trek IV was that Paramount HAD a contract with Pine and the rest (made while JJ Trek III was still in production) that had an agreed amount - but an amount Paramount was no longer willing to honor after JJ Trek III's Box Office performance. I believe some were willing to take less, but Chris Pine was not (and I for one agreed with his stance even though I would have liked to see that version of JJ Trek IV they were proposing.)

So yeah, it will ultimately depend on how much Chris Pine wants to make Paramount pay for NOT honoring the first contract for a JJ Trek IV that they originally signed with him in 2016.

I kind-of hope he punishes them for their short-sightedness the last time around. He holds all the cards if they come back to him, hat-in-hand, asking to be a part of the next movie. Really no point of doing it if he doesn't agree to it.

Pettiness is always fun.

Personally, while I don't hold to the common belief that Paramount is the great evil, I do think they are making an overture that could support recruiting at least two of the original cast, and Abrams' participation could also go far in making that a possibility. I think that they could easily bring in two, and create a new crew for the series going forward. I don't see it as outside the realm of possibility, as well as the fact that they could move the Kelvin series further on.
