What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

I think Burnham has had great character development.

Agreed. Of the main cast I think Stamets, Culber, Tilly, Saru and especially Michael have had a great deal of meaningful development over the course of the series, and ‪‪though comparatively Adira has just begun their character’s journey, they’re getting a chance to develop as well.

And ‪‪I’d say a fair number of recurring characters, or former cast members, like Book, L’Rell, Tyler, Admirals Cornwell and Vance, Lorca, Gabrielle Burnham, and Georgiou, have had qualtiy character development of varying degrees of signifcance as well.

The Shatner/Reeves-Stevens' books, in particular The Ashes of Eden and The Return are canon.
James Kirk can just reappear as a Picard-era Admiral at anytime.

Things happening to characters doesn't equal character development.

I'd say the only character who actually has changed a bit over the series is Stamets.

Really?

Burnham hasn't changed? To say that is completely disingenuous.
Culber hasn't changed? He went through an entire arc where his identity was in question and he had to deal with considerable PTSD which affected his relationships and his image of himself.
Tillly hasn't changed? She went from an awkward cadet to someone who started to learn how to contribute and interact with superiors, to now someone who has carved out her own destiny.
Saru hasn't changed? He went from being skiddish and fearful through an entire evolutionary (literal) evolutionary process. Now he's an ambassador, and a confident, wise officer.
Stamets has changed the LEAST, I'd say, but he's certainly a little softer.

I mean.....I don't even know what to say. DSC and DS9 easily have the most "character development" in the Star Trek franchise. You don't have to like the show, and you don't have to like the direction the development has taken, but you sure as hell can't say DSC hasn't developed and evolved the main characters. That's outright bunk.

That's exactly what we do any way. We discuss our reflection upon in universe facts. Thankfully, we also argue about them-all the time. So it is rarely dull.

Of course we do, and that isn't dull, I agree. It's just that I wouldn't expect too much of such discussion around these facts allowed in a thread titled 'objective facts'. Much like, say, discussion of episodes is discouraged in the 'last Star Trek episode you watched' thread.

Well then the character development has been cliched enough to make me feel there really hasn't been much.

And Discovery has nothing on DS9. Hell, half the time Discovery doesn't even remind me of Star Trek.

I have a lot of issues with DSC but Burnham's character development isn't one of them. She clearly has gotten development and has become a lot more considerate of her shipmates' wants and desires, more freewheeling and in touch with her lighter side and a lot more fun to watch. If anything she was one of the characters that needed to be, well, more human and she's now a more well-rounded person who's significantly more entertaining to watch.
