Casual clothes TNG to PIC - from terrible to far too 2020s?

What, it's only Utopia if everyone's wearing ill-fitting jumpsuits?

I mean, maybe? Haha. No of course not. Actually I’m not a jumpsuit fan. So impractical. For example, early DS9/VOY uniforms are possibly my favourite in Trek, but I hate that they are jumpsuits. Why not jacket and pants/trousers like season 3 onwards next gen? How long does it take these people to go to the toilet?!

coveralls for engineers sure, but get everyone else in a 2 piece.

Not the uniforms though. Kirk’s Admiral one at the beginning aside they are not good. (Quite like Kirk’s short sleeve one too….)

Or I might have poor taste... But, I don't like the TMP uniforms either. They strike me as a bit impractical in terns of quick readability. But, I don't think it would take much to remedy that idea. Kirk's admiral uniform is proof of that.

Why aren't Cargo Pants and other Cargo style clothing more popular in the future?

We need MORE POCKETS people!

What about Modular / Convertible clothing where sleeves / legging sections can be removed & mixed/matched via zippers?

That should also be a more popular trend IMO.

All that extra functionality.

Men can wear Cargo Capri's.

Capri's shouldn't be limited to women's only fashion IMO.

You gotta admit, Rafael Nadal looks good in Capri's

I have wondered this! Modular would be great. Maybe with some sort of future sealing tech rather than zippers. However the lower half of Khan’s mask/helmet was attached. I’ve always loved it when he peels it off.

Remember, Velcro was once considered Futuristic.

But somethings, simpler is better.

Between Buttons, Snap Fasteners, Zippers, Velcro, Magnetic Strips, or Zip Lock seals, you've got plenty of choices to close a pocket.

If you want a setting about contemporary people put in SF scenarios, Star Trek isn't the universe for you.

It's several hundred years in the future. The Federation/Starfleet is explicitly not like us in a lot of ways. No one is racist (against other humans). No one needs to worry about their commanding officer sexually harassing them. No one needs to worry about being totally destitute and homeless. You can go up to a device and get any food/mundane item you wish. Very few humans appear to have anything resembling religious beliefs. Very few humans seem to care about making money. The list goes on and on.

For all of these reasons, I don't have issue with somewhat alien fashions. I'd actually love if we saw a move away from clean lines to more of the frippery that we had 500 years or so ago. Both the idea that future humans will dress just like us and the idea that we'll all wear austere white togas are really overdone.

EDITED TO ADD: For what it's worth, I personally think all of Star Trek up through Enterprise and Nemesis looks dated. It's just a matter of to what degree.

I love this guy's "first time watch" stuff on all the Trek films. He's not a dedicated fan like many of us, so his reactions are purely from the standpoint of "was I entertained?"...and his pure joy and love of the films is so refreshing. I like listening to his takes a lot.

a good point. I suppose we know those outfits did exist and are coherent to the natural evolution of styles whereby future shows are pure conjecture. But I like the argument as someone who likes the more out there future clothes.

This is where my opinion is a bit more controversial than other Trek fans, I suppose. Basically, I don't treat Trek as a period drama. For outfits I want to see clothing that I believe could arise from contemporary fashion because it is trying to project, in part, our humanity's future. So, tight fighting onesies? I have a hard time believing that based on what I see now. That's not to say it is inaccurate to what might occur, but rather what stands out to me as fashion evolution.

Historical pieces have defined fashion. Star Trek does not. It utilized fashion cues from the era it was produced in.

If you look back to the crazy stuff that people were wearing in the 1970's compared to today, it's not that odd to think that the crazy stuff they wore in the TNG/DS9 era would be muted in the PIC era.

I personally think the classic "Suit Jacket" needs to get rid of the Lapel, and have the Jacket close together with a traditional Tie-style middle piece that is modular.

You can zip the fixed Tie Connector on either side of the jacket and not have to wear the tie around the neck. This way, you can have modular fashion that can Mix/Match.

You can use the fabric from the Lapel to make up for the narrower top part of the Tie-like center fabric connector and that would balance out the look for your classic "Suit Jacket".

Then, the dumb lapel can go away forever.

And nobody needs to get choked by a tie ever again.

And you can close or open it from either side.

And if it gets dirty, you can swap it for another Tie.
