Is Star Trek: Picard lasting 7 seasons a possibility?

This idea keeps coming up. First, those characters aren't interesting enough to warrant an entire show (there's a reason they're called 'supporting cast'). Second, it seems that they're not even in S3 based on interviews and such. So, it would be odd to write them out of the story for a season, then suddenly make them the focus of a new show.

Why spend two seasons developing a supporting cast only to dump the whole kit and kaboodle in S3?

It makes no sense. It would be as if TNG threw away the entire Enterprise crew save Picard.

Seven of Nine was brought in for a reason. Her fandom is almost on a par with Picard's.

I 100% agree with you about Seven of Nine. She is one of the most popular characters of the whole franchise and could easily carry a whole series.

As for "dumping" some of the Picard cast going to season three, we'll see what happens (Steward alluded to this in SFX interview) but I think there would be a serious story reason for this. Casts staying static isn't really the done thing any more in TV, I mean Discovery has had two captains come and go, and other characters leave (though some for rumoured spin-offs).

But and SPOILER HERE don't read if you don't want potential season 3 info:
Alison Pill and Santiago Cabrera are working on other projects (have been since the fall when season 3 started filming) and Evan Evagora and Isa Birones have been allowed to make in person convention appearances since August while Stewart, Ryan, and Hurd have only been allowed to make virtual ones because of covid protocols on the Picard set.

Yeah, I'm really not sure what is going to happen, going into season three.
I don't know about Alison Pill, but there's no evidence that Cabrera is working on another project currently - he did a guest stint on The Flight Attendant, but social media posts indicate he wasn't on that set for long and finished there quite a while back, so it could have been fitted in during a break from Picard. But on the other hand, there have been recent pics on social media showing that he definitely no longer has the Rios hair and beard, and hasn't done for some time. And while I agree with Danja that it seems strange for a show to establish a strong core cast and then discard half of them along the way, not all of the regulars were in every episode of season one, so there's also precedent there for being flexible with the cast. As for the Discovery model, yes characters have come and gone there, but not the core cast, that's always stayed stable. Here, Cabrera was the first actor signed for Picard after Stewart, before any scripts were written, the character of Rios was specifically designed for him, while Soji was hugely important both to the central plot of season and to Picard's character, she was designed to take Data's legacy forward into a new generation, so it seems strange to think that either one could be discarded from the show now, to take just those two as examples. Especially when you would think that the franchise as a whole would want to build up a strong core of new characters to take forward into the 25th century era. But there have been a few changes of showrunner along the way, and we've no way of knowing yet what direction the S2 storyline is going to take the show. And the show is so intensely focused on Picard as its central figure, everyone else has been very much overshadowed, making it hard for any of the new characters to really get fully established. So it is all very much up in the air!

The fans -- and the media -- have been screaming for a Seven series ever since she first came aboard Picard ("Give this woman her own show! She's THAT damn good!")

Maybe she'll get her ship after all.

Picard, her own show, puppet theatre ... whatever she does, I'm thrilled to see her. :adore: :luvlove:

NCIS has overturned its cast several times over the past nineteen seasons.

Dark is hip right now (The Book of Boba Fett is currently on a tear at Disney+).

The cast of Picard were never a crew. It was an old man, mercenaries, holos and a mole. One of the things that bothered me about the ending was the "off to our next mission" thing when it really should have been back to Earth and go pur seperate ways.

It felt like it could've been an ending to the entire series, like they weren't sure they were getting a season two when they wrote it and wanted to finish things on a happy 'off to the next adventure' feeling.

But they're enough of a crew for me to want them to get their own series after Picard ends, I don't care how much the writers have to contrive things to bring them back together.

Seven, Raffi, and Elnor are definitely together.

Sooooo (again potential season 3 spoilers)

Alison Pill is currently filming a new series for Apple TV called "Happy" which began shooting in LA back in November. Also Pill has been very active on IG and there are some hints in comments she is not filming Picard season 3. Cabrera is, according to deadline, appearing in eight episodes of Flight Attendant in season two after he was upgraded to a recurring character. Also knowing something of actors contracts myself, main Picard cast would be not be allowed to make even guest appearances on other shows while filming is underway for a season they had previously signed for. Now, it could be his role was reduced to reoccurring in season three and producers of Picard allowed to film Flight Attendant. But that seems odd given how strict the covid protocol on Picard was until the winter holidays. This could totally be wrong, but with season 3 being set on a Starfleet ship, and the fact the Goldman and Stewart hinted on big changes in season 3" we'll see.

Sir Patrick agreed to do the series on the condition that Picard not go back into Starfleet (he didn't want to wear the uniform again -- he did it for seven years and four feature films).

He's evidently been reinstated as of 2x01 though, right? That's the net assumption, anyway; he's in Starfleet garb. (Not talking about the alt-future garb.)

I'ma be honest here: I never liked the fact "Picard" - the series - had a diverse "crew" set up to begin with. It felt too much like formula.

It should have been Picard + one or two friends, and that's it. And then have it be Cabrera's crew, that they met all at once.

Like on TNG, we followed a ship, that had one or two guest stars on board any episode who had their own stories. This time, it should have been one or two main characters on their journey, being guests on another man's ship. And then disperse in the end. (And if there's a second season - Picard just books the same ship again. But don't have the same diverse group of people with very diverse jobs & goals stay together " just because".)

It might be a flashback.

He's in a Starfleet jacket in his study, talking to Laris. If it's a flashback, it would be from the time following their defection from Romulus. That was depicted in the Picard Countdown prequel comic (though not canon, I know). However, didn't he go back to the vineyard AFTER he left Starfleet? That wouldn't sync. Anyway, we'll have to see.

I mean, it was Picard and one or two people. He recruited Raffi and hired Rios. Everyone was someone who came aboard for their own reasons, and then they jelled into a found family.

And I think the show falls apart with that element of found family, because one of the areas of growth Jean-Luc needed for the show to reach catharsis was a willingness to embrace his own role as surrogate father figure.

I dunno. I enjoy a found family show, so the idea that all these disparate people could come together almost by chance and then choose to stay together at the end of it all doesn't bother me at all. I don't think that's actually going to happen, it seems likely the show will start shedding some of the characters it has accumulated along the way, probably by the end of season two. But I'd have been on board with the idea of the crew choosing to stay together for a while after season one, because it suits them and because they've come to enjoy being a crew, and then bonding more through further adventures. But then, that show might not have been Star Trek: Picard, which wants to be about Picard as an individual, rather than about his new crew.

Does he even WANT to be a father figure at this point in his life?

Does he want the responsibility?

I think that's exactly the part I didn't really like.
It's a good concept for a "crew" show (like DIS or lower Decks). But for a "Picard" show I was kind of hoping for a character piece - like "Logan" or something, one man on a personal journey.
I didn't want "Firefly". I wanted "Blade Runner".
