To be fair, back then there weren't many options available. And even then, Serenity didn't exactly light the box office on fire. Really, I suspect if streaming had been a thing back then, that's how Firefly would have continued after Fox cancelled it.

If you're going to make a movie for theatrical release based on a fairly obscure TV show, it has to work as an introduction to the show's characters and universe and tell a story that leaves the audience wanting more. Serenity didn't do that. Doing a movie based on part of the seventh novel in a long series of books as an introduction to potential new audiences? Well, it's one way of killing off a franchise.

I want Amazon to make the movie. The reason why Amazon saved the show in the first place was because Bezos was a fan. I wouldn't even mind anthology series for the show, especially to tie what happened on Laconia to the rest of the series because it really did feel detached from everything else. I still don't know why it was included.

Star Wars started at episode IV, and the expanse is surprisingly popular. It may be they are looking to syndicate for a few years (other streaming only series are doing the same) then spring something.

It didn't, though. In 1977 I saw Star Wars. Not A New Hope, not Episode IV. Just Star Wars. Lucas added that subtitle and number years later. None of us who saw Star Wars when it was originally released theatrically thought we were getting a middle chapter.

Yes. And no. (Oddly I just finished J.W Rinzlers book on it.)
It still has the opening crawl though, setting it in that episodic vein from day one.
But, the point I was making is that it still — from a certain point of view xD — starts midway through a longer story, after events that are relevant, without needing to have seen them. Clone wars, Anakins fall (be it death or what we got) the fall of the Jedi… all mentioned, but not one hundred percent necessary to still enjoy what there was.

Even our own Star Trek doesn’t start with Kirk taking command of the enterprise etc (except, of course, in the film… which is also quite dependent on a series you couldn’t guarantee all audiences were familiar with. Quite a lot, mind you.)

Lovely ending, reminded me of the final scenes of TNG. No mean spirited deaths to add to the drama, just the characters going off with new adventures still awaiting them and of course, the ship flying off into the distance.

Three years later. "Episode IV / A NEW HOPE" was added for the 1980 re-release leading up to The Empire Strikes Back, which was always titled as Episode V.

An interesting side effect of this is that the opening title music was composed to correspond with the crawl, with certain parts coming in in time with the text appearing, but that effect has been totally lost for essentially everyone who saw the film more than three years after the original release (give or take the various unofficial restorations that have been done).

Just binge watched S6 over the last few days.

I want more.

As for the finale - I liked that little bit of meta at the end when Naomi shut down Holden as he started setting up a theoretical next season. "Let's just enjoy this moment." I didn't notice the drop ship easter eggs either - great stuff. Needed an Adama.

I look forward to doing a full re-watch at some stage. I'm pretty comfortable slotting this in beside BSG to share the #1 spot for best sci-fi series of the last 20 years. In terms of smart, adult-orientated sci-fi with a compelling, layered story and strong characterisations, I don't see anything on the market to fill the gap, or at least anything approaching the calibre of this show. Will be sorely missed.

Don't forget The Orville will be back soon! Same with The Mandalorian. Well technically it's already had it's first episode of it's 3rd season.

Hey, if Serenity can follow up a show with a small but devoted fanbase as a big Hollywood movie series, breaking through to a larger mass audience, and following up on all the dangling plot threads, answering the unanswered questions, and keeping the whole original team together for a bunch of fun adventures, then surely The Expanse -- oh, sorry, wrong universe, never mind.

Firefly had a celebrity creator in Joss Whedon that I think must have helped it get a movie. I think they were counting on his nerd clout to maybe get more people in the seats.

I saw Star Wars in 1977, when I was stationed in Orlando, FL and waiting for my Navy Nuclear Power Class to start. Then saw The Empire Strikes Back when it first aired in theaters. The ship I was deployed on returned to Norfolk, VA; from a 10 month deployment overseas on 26 May 1980. I remembered The Empire Strikes Back started the crawl with Episode V. I wondered if the previous movie was Episodes I - IV, or was it Episode I and we would get Episodes II - IV at a later date.

I saw all these movies first run in the theater as kid. I remember being confused that Empire was Episode V. I suddenly felt like I had missed something! Fortunately, others knew more and explained that I hadn't.

Yes. I know the IV etc was added later, but the opening crawl in itself is a staple of the old serial Lucas was emulating. Hence being in that vein from the beginning.

I finally finished the show tonight.

It wasn’t what I wanted, but it was acceptable. I think it’s a testament to the richness and depth of this universe that the main problem is there’s so much more I want to see.

The way it ended, it seemed like the whole 6 season arc was the prequel to another series, which I would like to see.

Overall, this is definitely one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time.

And I will always remember the line that would surpass even the best Klingon insult:

“Live shamed, and die empty.”
