I thought Kurtzman (or someone else?) said that they'd let Sir Pat call the shots on whether there would be a renewal. Once S3 is done production, a decision will probably be made. We may get S4, but if he decides to hang up his skates, ST: Picard will end. The other characters can be ported to a new show with a less misleading title, if anyone feels they should keep going.
While I’d be surprised if it did run past a third season, I don’t think they would be announcing a renewal for a 4th season before season 2 has even started airing. Technically PIC had its equivalent renewal, that the other shows have just gotten, long ago.
They probably won't do that until after Season 2 finishes, or during the promotional run up of Season 3.
I was thinking about it this morning, and I think it's entirely plausible we'll get two Picard seasons this year. Basically, the schedule of Trek releases is now filled out through July 7 of this year. We know that Lower Decks and Prodigy are both coming out this summer, though we don't know if Prodigy will overlap or not. But at minimum, presuming Lower Decks starts the week after Strange New Worlds, add 10 weeks and it gets you to September 22. The question is what Trek do they put on after this? Has to be Picard, given it's the only one of the live-action shows which is currently filming. So if it's done, it almost certainly comes next. I would think that post-production would be done on at least the first half of Season 3 by the fall, so it could be ready for release. The question is, would they see any positive in holding back for 2023? I could see the point, but we've waited so long for Season 2 already. And honestly, if they were concerned about not having enough content for later in the year/2023, they wouldn't be doing the minor show overlapping they have announced already, but trying to stretch things out with small hiatuses between each show. Which leads me to think they'll drop Picard Season 3 as soon as it's ready.
Yes, there's been speculation Picard season 3 could also air this year. While it is possible, I wouldn't go betting the farm on it yet.
Deep Space Nine started a new season twice in the same year, Voyager too, so it's not unprecedented, but I feel like Picard s2 is airing too late for that.
Apples and oranges. The only reason they started a new season twice in the same year is because their first seasons were mid-season starters premiering in January.
Yeah, I agree it would be...weird...to have a season 2 premier in March, then a Season 3 premier in say October or November. But the question is what else does CBS have in the pipeline? Discovery isn't even filming Season 5 yet, and every other Trek show will have finished a season up even more recently than Picard. So it seems like it's either release Picard Season 3 as soon as it's ready, or hold it back and...release nothing at all for months.
Wait, wut? Broadcast shows ALWAYS started a new season in the same year. Old season ended in May, new season started in September. What are you trying to say?

DS9 Season 1 --> January - June 1993 (a shorter season means they aired it later) DS9 Season 2 --> October 1993 - June 1994 DS9 Season 3 --> October 1994 - June 1995 DS9 Season 4 --> October 1995 - June 1996 DS9 Season 5 --> October 1996 - June 1997 DS9 Season 6 --> October 1997 - June 1998 DS9 Season 7 --> October 1998 - June 1999 VOY Season 1 --> January - May 1995 (a shorter season and the last few episodes were held back for S2) VOY Season 2 --> August 1995 - May 1996 (started early with the episodes they held back from S1) VOY Season 3 --> September 1996 - May 1997 VOY Season 4 --> September 1997 - May 1998 VOY Season 5 --> October 1998 - May 1999 VOY Season 6 --> September 1999 - May 2000 VOY Season 7 --> October 2000 - May 2001 The season usually began in September or October and usually ended in May or June. You have a think of a season of Broadcast American TV like you would a school year. Especially back in the '90s. It goes from Fall to Spring. If something premiered in January, it was premiering mid-season. DS9 and VOY's first seasons both started mid-season.
It's easier to say what I posted above -- EVERY TV show in existence followed this pattern until the advent of streaming (i.e. post 2010), at least in North American markets. Maybe it was different overseas?

Very different in the UK, yes. Where the US TV season tended to run September-June, roughly, the UK has tended to divide the year up into shorter blocks, so we'd have an autumn season (Sept-Dec), a spring season (Jan-April) and a summer season (May-Aug). Generally speaking, our shows would be slotted into one of those blocks, which is why they have traditionally been much shorter than US seasons.

The US kind of has that structure as well. A typical full season would run through the Fall and Winter (Spring) blocks, but mid-season replacements would be in the Winter block, and sometimes different programs would run in the Summer block (while most shows would just be in reruns). Of interest, UK shows like The Avengers and The Saint would tend to run in the Winter and/or Summer blocks back in the day.
