I wonder if the Chakotay we saw in the distress signal was actually from the future and not the past?

What if the Protostar is actually from 20 years beyond 2383 and the anomaly in question bumped it waaay back?

That could explain Chakotay's gray hair.

Might also explain a few other things.

Well, connecting all the different shows in some manner seems to be a thing Kushner Kurtzman likes at this point.

Kushner? Jared Kushner? I don't think I could watch Star Trek if I found out he was a major part of the franchise.

I think you mean Kurtzman. ;)

It's trendy now (look at the MCU).

He's already linked Disco back to Enterprise and Voyager.

"Now?" TNG did "Relics" and "Unification." DS9 did "Blood Oath" and "Trials and Tribble-ations." VGR brought in Riker once and Troi and Barclay on a recurring basis. Before all those, TAS did a bunch of sequels to TOS episodes.

Of course the different series in a single fictional universe are going to acknowledge their shared worldbuilding. That's the whole point of a shared universe.

If anything, the current shows are doing it less than they could. They reference the older shows, but they don't reference one another, aside from the Qowat Milat showing up in Discovery.

Linking shows up through simple mentions is one thing... Discovery S3 and 4 take place about 800 years after VOY.
I still doubt that Chakotay from the recording is from the future (ala ST: Picard) and to me it seems more likely he's from 3 or 4 years after VOY returned.
He already had a partially greying hair in VOY S7... and in the holo recording, he barely had a streak.

Saying Chakotay was from 20 years into the future would likely mean he would have appeared much older... and he didn't.

We know that Humans can live up to 150 in Trek... so, its not ENTIRELY out of the realm of possibility... but the Protostar's registry number would preclude the notion that the ship is from 20 years into the future.
That would mean that for something as ground breaking as the Proto core, SF decided to have used a design/platform from around 2373.

I would imagine that for a propulsion system of that kind, they would use a relatively recent ship design that was already used for testing experimental technologies... the ship's registry suggests the ship was build about 2 years (or perhaps a bit more) after VOY disappeared... it was then likely used a testbed for different technologies and found it would be suitable for Proto-Warp integration/testing after VOY returned.

The Protostar registry number itself is more or less enough for me to say the ship is not from 20 years after 2383. It would be within the first 5 years or a decade (at most - though 10 years is a stretch) after VOY launched.
Protostar was likely launched sometime in 2373 or 2374 (while VOY was in the DQ).

If Voyager was still in the DQ, why use Janeway as a hologram?

It would be one thing if she came back a hero. It would be quite another if she was presumed lost with all hands (it would be rather morbid).

Holo-Janeway referred to herself as being modeled after "one of the most decorated officers in Starfleet history."

I think it's safe to assume Janeway came back a hero

We know that Chakotay was the Captain of the Protostar, with Hologram Janeway, after 2378 and Voyager’s return, no doubt about it.

‪‪I believe @Deks is suggesting that the Protostar may have already been around before Chakotay and Holo Janeway were assigned to and installed on the ship, as he said in the same post that he figured Chakotay didn’t join the Protostar’s crew until 3 or 4 years after Voyager’s return.

While ‪‪I think it’s absolutely possible that the Protostar existed before Chakotay was assigned to its command, ‪‪‪‪I think it’s equally if not more likely that he was the first Captain of the Protostar, and Janeway a part of its programming from the beginning. With Janeway saying its purpose was to go ‪into the Delta Quadrant (and something…), ‪‪I figure more points to Chakotay as the first Captain of the Protostar, but there’s still so much we don’t know.

The Protostar is way more advanced than from the time period when Voyager returned.
That's why I think it's from farther in the future.

You are all trying too hard to cram it in to a specifically short time period when it's a lot easier to make sense of it all if it actually got sent back from a future period closer to PICARD than the end of VOYAGER.

That would explain the years long hunt by The Diviner, Chakotay's gray hair, the uniform differences and it also makes more sense for there to be a Holo-Janeway.
It also gives rise to an "in universe" explanation as to why we hadn't heard of the Vau N'Akat until now.
They weren't encountered until Chakotay's initial test run with the Protostar.

The USS Protostar was probably LAUNCHED around 2373-2374... it wasn't FITTED with the Proto-Core/Warp or Janeway hologram until AFTER VOY returned from the D.Q.
When VOY returned in 2378, Starfleet probably did some more research using data Voy also brought back... chose the USS Protostar as a testbed to use Proto-Core/Warp technology and re-launched it around 2381-2382... shortly after that (but before 2383) it encounters an anomaly and gets thrown over 20 years into the past.

Just because it was launched shortly after VOY was launched, it doesn't mean it wasn't already doing experimental testing of some other technology (or maybe a precursor to Proto-Warp/Core) while VOY was in the D.Q... it was just outfitted with Janeway hologram after VOY returned, promoted Chakotay and gave him the ship as his command..

Actually, the Protostar is not 'way more advanced' than the time period when VOY returned.
They are pretty much the same.

Just because it was launched shortly after VOY was lost, it doesn't mean it wasn't completely refitted/modified after VOY got back and was installed with the proto-core/warp and Janeway training hologram (which makes sense if the ship's mission was in the Delta Quadrant).

The Protostar would have been 4 or 5 years old by the time VOY returned in 2378.
It wouldn't be a stretch to think Starfleet decided to refit the Protostar entirely in the next year or 2 (by 2380) with the proto-core and Janeway hologram and re-launch it with Chakotay as its captain in 2381 or 2382.

Again... not really, and its not too complicated to have the USS Protostar being originally built and launched in 2373, and then recalled for a refit in say 2380 so it can be outfitted with Proto-Warp/core and Janeway hologram.

VOY was already in contact with SF in season 6 with the Pathfinder, and the ship transmitted all its logs when Barclay opened a micro wormhole to chat with the ship briefly.

Starfleet had at least a year (before VOY returned home) to 'play' with what data Janeway and her crew accumulated to finish/perfect Proto-Warp/Core.
The Janeway hologram was basically an addition roughly in 2380 (Janeway was promoted to Admiral in 2379).
And she's one of the most decorated SF officers indeed because she brough VOY back in 7 years along with massive amounts of data on the Delta Quadrant and new technologies.

Chakotay already had a partially grey hair by the time VOY returned to the Federation.
Another 3 or 4 years could have easily gave him another streak, depending on what happened to him.

Chakotay also mentioned an anomaly, and we know the ship was being searched for years BEFORE 2366... that suggests a temporal anomaly.
The Proto-Core/Warp and holo Janeway were probably installed in the 3 years since VOY returned (from 2378 to 2381)... then launched with Chakotay to go to the Delta Quadrant or wherever its mission was and got thrown over 20 years into the past.

    That easily fits too.
And it was mentioned by the show makers hat timeline would be 'wibbly-wobbly'.

And she was promoted to Admiral by 2379 (ST: Nemesis).
Its safe to say that having holo Janeway being installed as a training advisor (along with the Proto-Core/Warp) on the USS Protostar by 2380 is not a big deal... the ship ends up lost with Chakotay by 2381 or 2382 (presumably encountering an anomaly which throws it about 20 years into the past) and a year later (2383), the kids find the ship and escape Tars Lamora.

Going by registry numbers the Protostar goes between the second Defiant (from 2375) and the Titan (assuming Riker's its first Captain it'd be from 2379/2380). Then again I doubt the creators put that much specific thought into the registry number, so might not mean anything.

Starfleet registry numbers are all over the place in DSC and TOS and still somewhat inconsistent in the later series so I wouldn't put too much stock in a ship's launch year being in a particular number range.
