New Short Treks ???

Does anyone know what is happening with any new Short Treks whether there's anything in the works, or if the whole shebang has been forgotten. I haven't heard a peep regarding it.

About a year and a half ago Alex Kurtzman said he wanted to do more eventually, and mentioned that he was hopeful they’d get a chance to move forward with more after they were Emmy nominated for Season 2.

I’m not sure if they’ve explained it publically at length, but I’m willing to bet the primary barrier preventing them from making more at this moment is the ongoing COVID crisis. Productions are done in small pods/groups now to limit contact and exposure, and the nature of the short form standalone Short Treks are more difficult as a result.

All the COVID testing requirements mean that guest stars and sets are more limited resources, and it’s just more expensive to shoot now. For the time being ‪‪I think COVID will put an indefinite pause on the Short Trek series, but I’m hopeful we’ll get to that point sometime where they’re able to resume in the not too distant future.

That kinda explains it, but not really. I understand corona delaying productions but there has been nothing what so ever that Ive come across since the season two release.

To be honest, IMHO almost all the Short Treks didn't really add anything meaningful to the story. Most were just fluff. If they didn't make any more it wouldn't be a big loss.

How ever you veiw em, they did give us another Trek series to look forward to. And I do count Short Treks as another series of Trek, and hopefully not one that only survived as long as TAS.

The whole point of Short Treks was to fill up the long waits between seasons, but now we’re getting close to having Trek a year round…. Maybe Short Treks no longer serve their purpose?

They are not in production, largely owing to more shows being produced.

Same with the rest of Trek

I gave the OP my opinion about Short Treks. If you feel the burning need to pick apart my post, that's your problem.

Maybe it was originally conceived as a filler between shows, but beyond that, it has enormous potential to fill in blanks or unexplained/explored stories/back stories/ areas of various series and movies.

Once they've got Star Trek fans subscribed all year round there's little profit to be made from making extra short stories. Which is a shame because the more Trek series are running simultaneously, the more sets and characters they have available for the Short Treks.

Great point. TOS said it best; " Infinite diversity, in infinite combinations"

Which is why Kurtzman Hope's to return to it. But it isn't on the table of production right now due to a lot of factors.

They have 5 star trek shows in production. They don't need anything else, including short treks.

Short Treks Season 1 was just about reusing Discovery assets and retaining an audience in the long break between Seasons 1 and 2.

Short Treks Season 2 was half a pilot for the Pike show (Strange New Worlds) since he shows up in the first three shorts, and then they were testing children's 3D animation, possibly as a pilot for Prodigy. And, then, the teaser short for Picard.

I'm all about championing Short Treks as its own series (which it is), but it's unfortunately been used merely as an advertising tool for other shows. Something they seem to be using the shows themselves for (backdoor pilot for Starfleet Academy).

I found them very entertaining. Only a couple didn't really work for me (children of mars was not a story, it was a prelude). I enjoy short fiction and flash fiction, so that might be why. I hope they continue.

The reusing of Discovery assets is why a Short Trek involving Detmer, Owo, Rhys, Nilsson, Linus, etc should not be a problem. Is it really a big deal to see them working on a personal log in their quarters and seeing their perspectives on events that transpired over the season?

Which is why, with Section 31 and Starfleet Academy shows in the works and SNW set to premiere in the next few months, it will be back.

Its also where if a future Captain Worf show or animated Titan movie is in the works or otherwise, we’ll see a preview.
