What Changes Would You Have For "The Apple"?

AC84

Overall, this episode was a mixed bag with some clear flaws and genuinely great moments. Despite this, I honestly don't see where the special effects could be improved. A new Vaal? Updated and stylized for 2008, but true to the horned reptile image of the original? I think Vaal looks fine, but I know some fans don't share that view. The only other thing I can think of is the bolt of lightning that kills one of the security guards (I think this episode has the highest body count of expendable red shirts). But even if you replaced it with a more photorealistic bolt, does that really improve the scene?

I'd like Vaal replaced with a giant styrofoam vagina, as specified in the first draft of the script.

maybe a space scene where the Enterprise is under attack? Plus the usual planetary approach and orbit scenes.

I'd like to see Scotty get trigger-happy and perform the saucer separation Kirk ordered. :bolian:

Mallory lives. :D

I object. I've been tolerant about the remastering changing things a bit but this is the last straw. The Death Of Mallory is one of those all-time classic cinema moments.

It'd be like remastering Rhett to say "Frankly my dear I guess I do give a damn." It'd be like remastering King Kong to totally ignore Fay Wray. Darth Vader would say "Luke, I am not your father; in fact I'm not even remotely related to you." Tarzan would say "Me Jane, you Tarzan."

Rick would say "You don't have to play it again Sam." Soylent Green would actually be made from plankton or seaweed or whatever. Greedo would be shooting first-oh wait, forget that one.

But I think I've made my point. Don't Screw With The Death Of Mallory.

Red shirt deaths are always fun. They better have some in the new movie!

I just got done watching the episode. I was disappointed they didn't change the blue sky behind the stormy clouds. It still doesn't match up with the beautiful red-orange sunset-like sky we see in a majority of the episode.

A quick, close up fly by of the base of the neck, showing some external latches disconnecting? Sort of the first stage outer docking mechanism retracting, but not actually separating?

That would be great to see as well, but the sky and lightening as others have mentioned need some fixing up as well.

Maybe not a new Vaal but some effect in the eyes, or a new special effect around...am I right in thinking there were antenna's in this episode of some kind? some replacement effect to those.

The standard orbital shots. There were no polar ice caps, supporting Spock's assessment that the entire planet, even the poles, was very temperate. They gave the atmosphere a reddish tinge to support the red sky on the practical set. The attack on Vaal had some nice phaser effects.

The big thing they neglected to fix, as mentioned above, were the blue-sky stock shots of the building storms which contradict the red sky practical set. That was an obvious thing that needed fixing and they didn't do it. :(

From orbit, only the "horizon" (edge of the planet) shows the red hue. Looking straight on, it's the familiar Class-M blue. So on the planet surface scenes, a red sky looking toward the horizon and a blue sky looking straight up would be correct.

I thought the phaser assault on Vaal was dramatically improved.

They changed so little in this one it was terribly anticlimactic. I had hoped they would redo the "lightning strike" shots so when the redshirt and then the spot of dirt near him got hit they'd have looked a lot better. But I guess they thought redoing the whole sequence would have taken too long.
