Wow, what kind of Kirk would do something like that? It's almost like that uppity chick thinks she has some kind of right to be a protagonist who does daring, heroic things.

And then there's this:

Because the problem is that the story has allowed her to be a protagonist who has accomplished extraordinary things, is the point here. It's "insidious" that she's a protagonist at all. She's unreasonably "entitled" no matter what she does or how much it matters.

And just in case the point wasn't clear enough, White Dudes are not being paid sufficient deference by the writing.

If certain podcasts are distancing themselves from him, I expect it's likely because he keeps saying the quiet part out loud.
This post is a mess of unattributed quotes from other posters about your tweets, which would have been twitter's problem except you chose to come here to defend your racist, sexist, and insecure comments. Please don't.

Burnham learns a hard lesson by getting people killed.

Kirk didn't really learn that until Wrath of Khan, despite his cockups in TMP. Mention of Kobyashi maru etc does make me hope she'll learn a lesson by the end.

Perhaps Voyager will disappear with all hands, leading into Discovery Season 5: The search for Saru, or maybe a spinoff of Voyager being stuck in a remote part of the cosmos trying to get home.

TNG didn't have lots of action to take him out of. TNG was very much about problem solving with the mind and using talking to get out of problems. Which is a good thing because most of the fist fights were just terrible on the show.
Is it true that the tv sensors would not let them punch people? That's why they had to hit them with the back of their hands?

I'm very sensitive to characterization issues, but Book always rang true to me. Just because you're huggin' trees (literally and figuratively) and have a huge soft heart doesn't mean you can't be a fighter. We've also seen a bit of development last season, when he learned to open up.

I'm a bit worried about Adira. I really liked them last season and I'm glad they're trying to give them more character traits than just "science prodigy" and "non-binary." But I hope they aren't trying to make them the new Tilly, now that the latter grows more self-assured. If it was just a one-time thing of nervousness in a new position, that's fine. I mean, ofc they can be nervous at times... just don't make them NewTilly.

And her bf really needs a body/ life of his own!

ETA: Fied gender pronouns... wow, there were a lot in 1 paragraph!

It’s Friday. That means I can sign in to Netflix and watch the new Discovery

You weren’t exactly a fan anyway….why care?

How did Starfleet recruit new servicemen following the Burn and before the reopening of Starfleet academy?
Probably decentralized similar to Icheb on Voyager, with training maintained by isolated Starfleet outposts.(Wunderlands by Una Mcormack describes N.C.O Sahil employing a courier mercenary Jeremiah as technician in exchange for ship repairs which probaby reveals a common practice of a core Starfleet crew and the extra manpower being mercs)

The premiere was fine. Nothing Earth shatteringly good but not S1-2 terrible either.

The pre-credit sequence was probably the best part. The chemistry between Burnham and Booker is the single best thing to come out of S3. They fit so well together.

if Harry Kim ever wanted a promotion boy did he pick he wrong show. Tilly from Cadet to LT in two seasons.

The Kelpian stuff was so unnecessary.

I mostly agree with the President about Burnham. I’m curious if they ditched the Kelvin-verse thing of Spock creating the Kobayashi Maru. Feels like they did.

hate the duty uniforms and Burnhams leather jacket. But the dress uniforms were pretty sharp.

the rest of it looks fantastic. They really use every dollar of that big budget.

First time I’ve heard it since last season but man, the title song really leaves you wanting after hearing the ones for LD and Prodigy.

I give this a 6 outta 10.

See, I don't think the President should "come around" to Burnham, she basically said, "You're awesome but not ready, there are a few problems". It would be nice if they both learned new things being each other's foil. And Michael works on her flaws, like any good officer would.

But considering the way Trek (and, tbf, most other shows) have depicted politicians, combined with DSC's tendency to Alway Prove Burnham Right, I'm skeptical.

As an episode, this worked well for me, so I'm undecided between 7 and 8 points.

That was not what the President was talking about though. I'm sure that the President is fully aware that Starfleet Captain will at times needs to make the ultimate sacrifice. But this wasn't one of those times. Rillak was specifically talking about Burnham being unwilling to delegate responsibilities to subordinates that may cost those subordinates their lives. This is actually a bad trait to have as a leader. Detmer or Rhys were probably perfectly capable of completing the mission and Burnham should have stepped back and allowed one of them to do so.

A good leader has faith in their crew and encourages them to take risks in order for them to develop experience. Everyone on Discovery's bridge know what they have signed up for and Burnham taking on all of the responsibilities because she wants to bring everyone home is doing her crew a massive disservice. Burnham needs to be sending the kids on dangerous away missions, getting them to do risky endeavours and putting their lives on the line, because as starfleet officers, they need experience in those situations. One day one of these officers, is going to need to make the call, and may find themselves ill-prepared to do so because Burnham chose to bubble wrap her crew instead of empowering them to take calculated risks.

Burnham also needs to realise as Captain that some times when you try to get no one killed, you run the risk of getting everyone killed. Part of the Kobayashi Maru test is to prepare cadets for that inevitability one day. If a Captain can't accept that some of their crew may day in the line of duty because of said Captain's orders, then they don't have any right being in the big chair.

Fair enough, all of that and it's true. But I wasn't even referring to the President's little speech. I was just referring to Kirk and Michael in-general. It was a wider observation that goes above and beyond just this episode.

I mean, the President's basic message to Michael was "being a leader is about more than being a hero - sometimes you have to let someone else be the hero, and sometimes the bravest thing you can do is admit you can't do everything." And - with the notable exception of Kirk - that's how all the Trek captains have behaved.

Upthread someone worried about Adira becoming the new Tilly.
Yup.
I just don't like that nervous/insecure/talks-too-much type of character. On a show or IRL. Like Reg Barclay. Super smart people have to be nutty/annoying?

But this show veers into casual/wisecrack/cute-land too much for me.

YMMV and most certainly does.

I am oddly enjoy Prodigy, though, maybe because it is a kid's show so casual/flippant is to be expected? Whatevs.
