How long did people have to wait back in the 80's and 90's for Trek to be broadcast overseas, I know at various parts it was a while. That really had to suck, but the big difference is today its far, far more common to see maybe not a day on day release, but at least a fairly close one with film and tv.

Season 5 of DS9 and season 4 of Voyager aired in Australia in 2000, so 3+ years behind.

It was fine. Good action and it set up the season. I liked that Rhys had more to do, and I did notice the Lurian on the station. Not sure how I feel about the Federation President yet. She does seem like your typical politician, and she's probably going to be the foil for Burnham all season long.

I'd probably give this episode a 6

The beginning was very Star Trek Beyond with the greeting that goes horribly wrong.
I don’t know why Stanmets seems to be the engineering guy. That’s not his job. I thought they hired someone to do that. Also why is the President in charge of selecting a captain for Voyager? That’s not her job.
Other than that it was alright. This new threat better not be linked to this more advanced “spore drive” they’re developing. A strange line to say since spore tech is already “god tech”.

How do you know what the President's job is? That certainly isn't based on materials from any previous Trek because we have almost no knowledge of any kind about how the President of the Federation interacts with Starfleet. If they are part of a chain that ties into Starfleet or even just gives some influence to it, and that's not to mention a Federation nearly a thousand years in the future.

The President job is the leader of the Federation. Assigning crew to a ship would be under Starfleet’s jurisdiction. She would have more important things to do than that. Just felt a bit odd. That and her coming on board the ship without her own security detail.

‪‪I enjoyed it a great deal. I’m enjoying seeing Michael in the Captain’s chair, the whole crew working together, and I really loved seeing Saru and Su’kal on Kaminar, and the joint Kelpien/Ba’ul meeting.

Of course, I really feel for Book, what with Kwejian getting Krypton’d, and poor Kyheem & Leto have been Robert & René’d. Come to think of it, with Kwejian ‪‪shattered, and Book having previously said his empathic abilties were fairly rare in his species, it would seem possible if not probable that will make/keep Book and Stamets somewhat uniquely qualified to operate the Spore Drive.

‪‪I like the new President, she’s a politician through and through, but ‪‪I like way it seems like they’re setting up her dynamic with the crew of Discovery as the season progresses. ‪‪I have more thoughts, but it’s late and getting later.

‪‪I just wish fans everywhere were given an opportunity to enjoy it with those of us lucky enough to watch today.

I don't recall very much civilian involvement in Starfleet in past shows, though there are some rare examples.

In Star Trek IV, the President demoted Kirk to Captain and presumably assigned him to the Enterprise-A.

The Federation civilian government, including the President and Federation Council has given orders to Starfleet before, such as in improving security measures on Earth in Homefront and instituting the Warp 5 speed limit in Force of Nature. It would make sense for the President to be involved in high profile initiatives.

In the real world, in the United States, hundreds of military promotions have to be confirmed by the US Senate each year. I presume the US President can recommend any commissioned officer be promoted.

Did the President not dictate Starfleet ranks and roles at the end of Star Trek IV?
That was odd, is he the head judge as well? Never noticed it, but it's really strange XD
Perhaps he pulled strings to preside over the trial because they saved Earth and he wanted to make sure no real judge actually punishes them XD

Star Trek IV was a special situation since Kirk did something that saved the whole of the Federation.
Here though… I feel this would be up to the CinC and the other Starfleet higher ups.
Maybe I’m thinking too much into it. She’s probably having her gander around. Seeing someone she likes to recommend to Vance.

I’ve been reading Coda recently and so my first thought was the Devidians with those Anomalies. That would have been funny.

This really felt like a Star Trek episode to me. Probably its weakest elements is that it had many multiple storylines, that focusing on one or two gives a story more room to breathe. I would give it a 7.5 (so rounded to an 8 for the poll).

After seeing what looked like a moon turning onto debris, I expected Book's planet to be seriously damaged, was surprised to see it the debris.

The Oort Cloud (though I need to rewatch and see if the station was on the outside of system or within one) comment didn't bother me anymore then anytime we see an Asteroid belt and dozens of asteroids all on the screen in close proximity to each other, when in fact their should be vast separation between them.

Was more baffled by how quick apparently Book's ship was able to get to Discovery, but I forgot it jumped though, I have to assume that Book's ship has the ability to locate Discovery since it made it on autopilot and he wouldn't know where it went or where it jumped to.

Now off to watch Prodigy

I thought it was okay. You can tell they really had no interest in doing anything with Suru on his home planet. They just needed him out of the way for a minute so Burnham could become Captain. I feel the show was at it's best doing the action. Which I would be happy with if this show just embraced being a action show because I loose interest when they try an do to much character development. The show has fully embraced it's Kelvinverse spirit at this point even if it keeps trying to technically be a Prime Universe show.
