I almost wish there was a "grownup-edit" (no not that way) It doesn't take too much off, but the fart joke(s) did take me out of things for a minute.

The third (fourth?) outing is a good episode overall - providing a kid-friendly introduction to "planet of the week." I liked they used the conceit that the planet could help manifest the deepest desires of each of them, because it allowed us to get a deeper insight into the characters. Dal comes across as actually competent here, albeit still a bit cocky/restless. It is interesting that he was ultimately the one who saw through the visions first (although I wonder why he saw a vision of Janeway that immediately gave away that it wasn't real - maybe the planet understood he was cynical enough that illusions wouldn't work, and it had to try reason?). Gwyn is one seriously effed up girl emotionally speaking. Rok-Tahk just wants to be seen as a little girl, not a hulking monster. Zero loves to learn and...Jankom Pog is hungry? Okay, he still seems pretty shallow, but at least we know about the Tellarite generations ship now. I liked that The Diviner actually had some semblance of purpose to the story this week, and wasn't just being shown to remind the viewer the bad guy existed.

I was not expecting a cliffhanger at all after last week's semi-serialized outing. They seem to be pretty boned at the moment, with their ship being grounded, being a fair distance away from it, and the Diviner on his way to pick them up. It will be interesting to see how this initial arc wraps up next week.

My first 10 of the series. Outstanding. Creepy, thrilling and even Dal wasn't completely out of control and being annoying in every scene. The new tricorder design was a natural outgrowth of the one seen in NEM and even had a TOS sound effect and the fake images created by the planet for each individual were interesting. The writers and voice actors really hit this one out of the park.

Since we now know we're near (or in?) the Hirogen system...isn't that further proof the show takes place closer to the Delta/Beta Quadrant border? I'd have to check Star Charts again but I seem to remember the Hirogen were much closer to the Beta Quadrant, or possibly even reaching slightly into the Beta Quadrant?

That helps explain why a Tellarite sleeper ship was in the area, and the other Alpha/Beta Quadrant species being present. But it doesn't explain a Kazon being nearby.

The Hirogen relay station network extended into the Beta Quadrant so yeah, we're probably not that far from the Beta Quadrant if all the evidence piling up is any proof.

I moved up to a 9 this week..............good episode and A CLIFF HANGER!!!!!!! Damn them! They can do so much with animation now..........really lends itself to Star Trek. Aliens can actually look like more than a guy with a bumpy forehead!

Yeah, I knew this was going to be a two-parter (at least) about halfway through because the plot was becoming way too complicated to be resolved in the few remaining minutes. Boy, that kid is annoying. Now he's decided to Picard (take the fast ground vehicle and drive at unsafe speed) and let the others go on foot (what a prick!) Plus of course, he missed Holo-Janeway's warning before as the Doctor in Equinox she was turned into evil HJ by the flick of a switch... It's starting to be a recurring theme that the girl has to escape the brig one way or the other and then screw everything up. For one moment I thought I had heard wrong. I thought he called her "prodigy"... I said what??? No, it's "progeny"... Still, it's an odd thing to call your daughter.

Strange new worlds! That's what I like in my Trek.

Dal has a lot of growing up to do. He can grate a little, but that's what makes a good character arc. Also I get where he's coming from — a place of fear. I'm sure he'll outgrow it. We all got to start from somewhere.

I like that both Gwyn and Dal are seeking approval. Secretly, Dal wants Janeway around... a surrogate mother figure. Why else would she show up in his parental fantasy?

I'm pretty sure Gwyn will end up being the Avon to Dal's Blake.

10/10 for me.

Rok-Tahk continues to be my favorite character. She's just so sweet and wants to be seen as the little girl she is, and not some hulking monster.

Gwyn being taught how to access deep level protocols of the Protostar leads me to wonder just how involved her father was in the design and creation of the Protostar. Was he the former captain? Maybe. I don't know, but he clearly knows far more than they're letting on.

Jakom's going to have a lot of indigestion.

I'm not surprised at all that as a Medusan, Zero found a carnivorous dream world both curious and fascinating.

Dal is still annoying AF. It was dialed down a little, but lots of "ugh, come on" moments. He remains my least favorite character.

Anyway, good action, excellent visuals, interesting story, and an unexpected cliffhanger. This one is a 7/10. Solid episode.

It's not odd that a ship would have a backup warp core, but it does seem very strange to be designed so that the redundant core is in the same physical location as the primary core. So it would seem the purpose of having two on Protostar probably is not redundancy.

If they're in the same place (along with the third core), then its likely NOT redundancy... but to provide large amounts of power for whatever the ship needs (probably to reach extremely high Warp velocities past Warp 9.9 - because after this point, with every increment, both speed and power draw increase exponentially and also probably strong enough Structural integrity fields so that the ship can sustain such extreme velocities).
Warp 9.9 = 21 473 x speed of light... 9.91 = 42,946 x speed of light, 9.92 = 85,892, etc.

The USS Prometheus was able to maintain 9.9 without issues (and that was only 4 years after VOY disappeared)... meanwhile, VOY was limited to Warp 9.75 for 12 hrs according to dialogue (not 9.975).

If SF was able to further increase on efficiency and slapped on a second Warp core... the Protostar's conventional Warp drive might have a sustainable cruising speed (as in a speed it can maintain for as long as its necessary without suffering shaking and various structural problems) of Warp 9.92.
Plus, if the ship is capable of Transwarp... it would need a strong enough SIF among other things... but the third 'Proto core' (if it is called that indeed according to Twitter) could be for something else entirely.

First time we see our crew in a typical Star Trek aituation, slow start but really enjoyable after a while. May be a bit more but I’m giving it a 8.

It was obvious almost immediately what was going on, but probably only because I’m used to similar setups, the target audience might wonder what’s happening for a while.

Dahl is a bit less annoying and I’m really loving Gwyn, really liked what she did with the sword but wonder why she hasn’t used it the previous episode.

I don’t like the new tricorders: they are very generic and not up to the classic TNG ones. Also, what happened to the phasers?! The new type 1 is bigger than an old type II!

So the tellarites arrived on sleepers’ ships...interesting!

Didn’t expect it to be a two parter, looking forward to next week.

Best episode so far.

What I would like to know is whether that third 'Proto Core' Zero was investigating in the maze was real or yet another hallucination.
It seemed like it was real because when Dahl showed up and saved Zero, the 'Proto Core' was still there.

If that core in the maze was real, it looks like a potential temporal issue, or something else which was caused by that Proto core.

I was wondering how they were going to end the adversarial relationship between Gwyn and the rest of the crew... this might be the beginning of that. Since they're all marooned on a planet that wants to devour them, they'll probably have to work together to survive.

I really liked the evil version of Janeway... I'll bet Kate Mulgrew had fun pulling that off.
