It's definitely an electronic display screen. Good!

Likely. Also there's a rectangular white area on the bridge dome of the Enterprise from "The Cage(TOS)" and it's been explained as simply the sensor pallet on the other side of the viewscreen feeding information to the screen.

One thing is certain; Sean Ferrick who does "Ups & Downs" reviews for Trek Culture on YouTube is no doubt exploding with geeky glee! He has been been hoping for a reveal of Cetacean Ops all season, stating that desire in nearly every review.

Someone just pointed out to me, the Klingon Captain did give the Pakleds another bomb before the battle last episode.

The viewscreen is not a window. Its a holographic display (much like we've seen in 'The Year of Hell' how Voyager's front section bridge viewscreen had a hologrid behind it - aka, inside the hull).

Also, it seems the Cerritos itself was upgraded at the end of season 1 when it was in spacedock. It was able to withstand an attack from both the Pakled and Klingon bird of prey ships for a while (compared to when it first encountered the Pakleds).

I know that. But all the productions seem to be putting actual windows there these days.

And that section glows in almost all the exterior shots like other windows.

If a enemy hacks your computer system, you don't want them to be able to press a button or remote activate a function to automatically strip your vessel of your external armored hull plating.

That's a HUGE security vulnerability that you've just created.

I think it's wiser for that to be a manual process that is labor intensive and requires the entire crew.

The amount of scenarios that comes up where you need to strip hull plating is statistically small / rare.

So having that as a automated function isn't really important and worth implementing.

And Mike McMahon is sticking with the traditional Holographic View Screens.

Enemies don't hack computers. Even if they did Security would still fail.

The control panels they used to detach the panels were the same design as the ones used to detach the deflector in First Contact.

This was a solid, maybe good episode. But for me it was overshadowed by now actively disliking Mariner and also Freeman. Even for a comedy/ animated show (and an ofte less-than-first rate ship/ crew), their childishness/ unprofessionalism respectively is just too much for me. Do the prodcers think they have to paint them in such a bad light so Boimler looks better when saving the day for the 100th time?! Seriously.

Too bad, otherwise I'd have enjoyed that budding romance between Mariner and "stupid little butt" Jennifer. Speaking of emotions, Rutherford keeping 3 copies of Tendi meories... awww.

So, two setups for next season: 1. Rutherford's secret memories of something he's seen and 2. (sadly) Freeman's rehabilitation.

Yet the Enterprise-D destruction was due to Klingons hacking Geordi's VISOR to obtain the Shield Frequencies.

Even on ST:VOY, there were the 3 former Borg Drones that tried to hack Voyagers Computer, but security caught them.

Tendi & Rutherford need to just become a couple already and shag.

    Wishful thinking for next season:
    1. Keep Freeman in prison or promote her, I don't care as long as she's away from the 'Ritos. Optional if (2) applies.
    2. Ditch Mariner. They can do their family therapy in private and off-screen.
    3. Bring in T'Lyn instead.

The Captain even said Mariner wasn't anything like Kirk. That was her own self delusion.

Even when B'lanna was dealing with her "Ex", they were trying to hack Voyagers systems using techniques that B'lanna taught him.

The Klingons infected the NX-era Enterprise computer and forced them into a "Speed" (movie) like scenario where they had to be constantly going a bit faster until their engines overloaded.

Don't forget that Moriarty Hologram became sentient and took over the Enterprise-D computer systems.

Fair enough point. But, security always fails so it doesn't surprise me that they have vulnerabilities.

If your computer ends up hacked, you'd be borked either way. A hacker could easily trigger a core breach or compromise antimatter tanks to the point where it would cause catastrophic reactions.
Or just detonate the torpedoes inside the ship... or cut life support across all decks and remove all air (keep the ship).

Stripping your entire outer hull doesn't blow up the ship... it just makes it more vulnerable (and you still have shields - but if you're hacked, then chances are the hacker might compromise the shields too - or they would go for the shields first).
Starfleet ships computers aren't necessarily prone to being hacked... at least the instances where this happens are rare at best and hacking isn't a method frequently used in Trek - and I would think Starfleet would have improved their computer firewalls given all that's happened in TNG, VOY and DS9.

Point being, having the ability to automatically remove all outer hull panels wouldn't be any more dangerous than a 100 other things that are MORE likely to go wrong if you're hacked.

This function could be buried and difficult to access... so a hacker wouldn't necesarily be able to exploit it even if they gain access to the computer... or even THINK about doing it in the first place.

And enemy would likely go for the shields and weapons first... after that, the ship is more or less an easy target unless it has relatively thick hull.

At the very least, the Cerritos should have those DOT's to do that kind of work (which begs the question, why hadn't ower decks integrated them in Season 2)?
