What threads from other Star Trek shows do you want Strange New Worlds to pick up?

While I do want Strange New Worlds to establish its own tone and its own world building, it will still be part of the twenty-third century Star Trek universe. And as such, the potential exists to continue or build upon some of the world-building established in other shows.

There is story material from TOS with Spock and Leila Konami, and possibly T'Pring as well as established backstory for Christine Chapel that SNW could mine. Spock visited home 4 years before Amok Time. All of which is in the time frame of the new show.

And there are characters from Discovery, such as L'Rell and Tyler that could be revisited. I imagine any encounter with the Klingons would involve L'Rell, even if Pike just drops her name as someone he knows. Although, to be honest, I feel that the less we see of section 31, the better but YMMV.

Thoughts?

Hopefully Section 31.

Hopefully small dust ups with Klingons amounting to a lot of saber rattling, and the producers can reference ongoing tensions with Russia or China to help the inspiration, and keep in line with TOS.
We met several members of the House of Kor on Discovery, but we didn't actually meet Kor himself. He might be an interesting character to explore, but he would have to be kept away from Spock as Kor didn't recognize him in Errand of Mercy.

Or even Errand of Mercy.

I would laugh my ass off if the SNW Klingons had smooth foreheads.

I want to carry on Pike knowing his destiny from Disco S2. Becoming more and more reckless since he knows he won't die, leading to him being grounded as an academy instructor leading to the accident.

Also I want Kirk and Spock to meet for the first time. You know they'll do it.

  • Origins of “No one’s seen a Klingon in 100 years”, when the Federation Klingon Cold War was supposed to begin in the early 2220s (within the 100 year timeframe), the Battle of Donatu V happens in 2245, and Klingons are the reason Burnham was made an orphan. Why so tight lipped about the Klingons?
  • Logic extremists – why did they consider the Federation to be a failed experiment and want Vulcan to leave?
  • Captain Robert April & Dr Sarah April. Captain April is the most decorated captain in history at this point. Dr. April invented many procedures and instruments still in use by TOS. How and why did this come to be?
  • Kzinti & the Treaty of Sirius. It was the first war Earth was involved in, and the Kzinti were the first official hostile specie that Earth encountered, but we know basically nothing about this event and the subsequent fallout.
  • Definitely want to see Dramens, Phylosians, & Vendorians in action, outside of TAS
  • Denobula Triaxa – never been seen before, and their society has never been fully explored. What do they marry for? Are they opposed to power structures in general, explaining Phlox’s position in "Dear Doctor"? Are they friendly with Orions and still on good terms with Klingons, despite them being adversaries of the Federation?
  • Tellar Prime. The only planet of the founding members of the Federation that has not been visited on the surface. Aside from Alpha Centauri.
  • Matt Decker as Captain, before he became a Commodore.
  • The legacy of the Romulan War – since SNW predates “Balance of Terror” and Pike never comes face to face with a Romulan like his Kelvinverse counterpart, it would be interesting to explore what it was like before the Romulans re-emerged. Explore the uneasy peace in place, and the bigotry held towards the Romulans.
  • Malurians – in what other ways were they jerks before they were made extinct by the Nomad probe in TOS?
  • Orion ambitions in this era. In “Journey to Babel”, Thelev was to destroy the Enterprise at the Babel Conference to in order to start an interplanetary war. Allowing the Orions to supply both sides of the conflict with dilithium and raid Coridan at the same time. What the origins of this, considering the reputation of Orions as pirates in this era? It suggests that Orions are a formidable and underrated political adversary for the Federation.

Would a prequel to "Arena" work? We have only seen the Gorn a few times but it seems like that was a story that could use a little background, or we just go to the Gorn homeworld.
That could be interesting. Possibly Orions too in regards to the Babel Conference.

Ugh...

First contact was in “Arena” and the attack on the Federation colony on Cestus III was a preemptive strike from them. However, the Gorn homeworld has never been seen before. The only mention was that the Gorn Hegemony was in the five systems, according to Harrad-Sar in ENT, and that they made the finest meridor.

Meanwhile, first contact with the Gorn in the Kelvin timeline was in 2259.

Maybe the crew of the Enterprise decide to seek out more meridor for the bar is made the reason for visiting the Gorn homeworld?

The Federation had a presence there for some time prior to 2258 as per Discovery season 2. Leland transferred to intelligence work after an incident on Cestus III where he was "up to his ass in alligators". Maybe they were actually baby Gorn. ;)

I hope this show doesn't turn into a "remember that vague historic plot point on TOS?" fest. That's what Enterprise was for.

I think they will use familiar elements to tell stand alone stories that touch on modern day issues and connect to the characters on a personal level. Like exploring the idea of a friend dying and you can't be their which was a issue that happened during the pandemic. Pike gets word Boyce has gotten a disease back on Earth. He will be dead soon. The episode explores what Pike is doing knowing he can't be their. Also Pike feels guilt over how it makes him think of his own bleak fate. Or you can explore the failure of the Afgan war through the failure of the Nimbus III project.
