Yeah, they would want Ruk tower over Kirk as much as possible, otherwise they wouldn't have hired Kassidy. It's the other actors Shatner has to worry about.

 

I don’t think the Cage boots had the Cuban heel, did they? Maybe things will get more swinging as the show goes along.

 

Do we even get a good look at the Starfleet boots in "The Cage(TOS)"? Pike in his quarters might have his boots showing in detail when he's stretched out on his bed or while he's pacing around or kneeling inside his cell on Talos IV.

Now, these might not be UESPA boots, but I wasn’t expecting to take us into combat, y’know.

ETA I thought the same thing about the blurry heel and remembered the Mojave scene. I think those are Cuban.

Also, I read somewhere (Solow and Justman?), that the boots used for the pilots and the first few episodes were poorly made and uncomfortable. They were eventually replaced and I assumed those had the more stylish heels.

 

Those are pretty close to the regular series boots, they just look to be made of a thinner leather or faux leather.

 

IIRC, the boots in "The Cage" were off-the-rack. The boots used in TOS-proper were custom made by a shop in LA, which I think you can still order from them to make you a TOS pair.

The Pilot trousers looked like they were made of a shinier material than the regular series Starfleet trousers.

I saw him at a Creation convention in ‘84. You can imagine my dismay when he unloaded on Shatner. I was young and (more) naive and I wanted to believe that the camaraderie on screen was more than mere acting. Yeah.

Ah, but you're forgetting that "the most recent adventure of Kirk and Spock" had no canonical date of its own more specific than "In the 23rd century" (from the start of TWOK)... and that most fan chronologies of the time placed the TOS/movie era sometime in the early 23rd century, inasmuch as evidence ("Space Seed," "Tomorrow is Yesterday," etc.) suggested it was closer to 200 than 300 years in the future. If the FYM was c. 2207-12, and TWOK-TSFS-TVH c. 2222-23, then TNG would have begun c. 2301... at the very start of the 24th century. This would appear to have been the original intent, based on the 1987 version of the TNG writers' guide (by Gerrold & Roddenberry), which explicitly stated the show was set "near the beginning of the 24th century." Thus, if Data was (re)activated 26 years prior (as we know), and promptly entered Starfleet Academy, he could easily have been part of the class of '78. It all fit together just fine... until somebody inserted "2364" in the script of "The Neutral Zone" at the end of season 1, and everything had to be recalculated.

I'm partial to that explanation, as it would smooth over a multitude of sins, but I'm not holding my breath to ever see it confirmed canonically...

You might think that, right? But... I live in Richmond, VA, where until quite recently a major boulevard was lined for over a century with massive statues glorifying Jefferson Davis, JEB Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, and other Confederate figures, all of whom fought a losing war to preserve human slavery, unequivocally on the wrong side of history, against the very country the statues are situated in. Go figure.

 

If TNG started 2301, McCoy would only be 74. Why did they put DeForest through all that makeup then?

EDIT: also @lawman the Wrath of Khan dates the Romulan ale to 2283, but they don't say if that's an Earth year or a stardate

 

The fan / FASA chronologies you’re talking about are at least 40 years old. These are contradicted by canon mentions of dates in TNG, and the Okudas’ chronology is official. Why even bring this up?
