Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Spoiler/Rating Thread!!!

I had read the bit about the salt/rice line and that does have a nice ring to it. I wonder if it wasn’t literally translated for fear of being misunderstood as racially insensitive.

Apparently Ronny Chieng’s ABC line gets good laughs with knowing audiences.

Interesting that article pointing out “American Girl” in a positive light as I’m sure Xu Wenwu didn’t mean it as such in the movie.

 

I thought the same thing and I do wish that line had been translated more closely, but I get why they didn't.

I laughed but for the wrong reason. I mean, I figured it was something to do with her being Asian-American but I definitely didn't get the nuance of the moment.

True, but I get where they were coming from, especially after reading this from a Vox article:

At one point, Wenwu asks Shang-Chi’s friend Katy about her real Chinese name. It comes out in mumbles. She can’t even say it. Katy’s struggle with speaking Chinese is a subtle but important part of the movie. She’s not only an outsider because she’s a normal human in a world full of superpowered, magical people, but she’s also an outsider to real-world China (Macau is one of the real-life destinations she and Shang-Chi travel to). It drives home the unique Asian-American experience of not quite fitting into American life and not quite fitting into the culture and land your parents or ancestors are from.

In Wenwu’s eyes, Katy’s loss of her culture proves his point. He believes Katy has forgotten where she comes from and the power her name has. Wenwu thinks she’s assumed an American identity to make the people around her comfortable instead of living with the identity her parents dignified her with.​

 

I really enjoyed this movie, especially as a kung fu fan. Those close-ups in mid-spins were classic wushu. And that fight against the building window, plus erasing the camera from the reflection? That was even great from a cinematic point of view. And the use of the ten rings with tai chi was awesome. Also with Tony Leung, I wasn't sure how he'd play a bad guy since my experience with him in film has been seeing as a romantic lead, but he did good.

Everything was great, and my only nitpicks were nitpicks. Would've liked to see a tiny bit more of a romantic layer, or more hints of one with Shang and Katy. Would've liked to see Shang Chi take more of the inquisitive lead at the end to the origin of the ten rings. Just those two basic things that you see a million times in non-Asian leads in Hollywood. Also, maybe a slight addition of some dialogue with social commentary in the third act. But none of those wish-list items took away from enjoying the film or even compare to what we did get. I've seen it twice now, and want to go again.

For Michelle Yeoh's character, my interpretation is that she's from another universe, since she also appeared in GOTG 2. Would be cool to see her again with Silvester Stallone in GOTG 3.

 

Ooooh, yeah, I forgot about that. Her, Blade, Black Mariah...who else has played more than one character in the MCU (not counting things like playing Loki or a Skrull impersonating their character, or an LMD or other double)?

 

Peter Mensah comes to mind. He played a military man in Incredible Hulk and later an alien villain in Agents of SHIELD.

While it does suck for those people in China who would want to see it on the big screen, I hope the days of Hollywood self-censoring to try and appeal to the CCP's censors will become a thing of the past.

 

I just realized Paul Bettany played JARVIS and Vision, and the guy who played Sousa in Agent Carter/Agents of SHIELD was a cop in Avengers.

 

Well, in the case of Bettany, Jarvis became one part of Vision, so his dual performances are part of the story. That's not true for any of the other pairings (so far...).

 

Got to see for myself last night.

I had fun. Imagining the Ten Rings v. HYDRA behind the scenes...probably more of a long-term, low-level, skirmishing relationship...

Saw this today (by my standards of catching MCU films, this was quite delayed). Good solid fun. The young, little-known (to me, anyway) were charismatic, charming and likeable while Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung gave it gravitas. Luscious visuals at the start and I liked the fact that they went to non-English dialogue on a few occasions.

The action scenes were great, though I’m not sure that any of the later ones matched the initial one on the bus (the one on the scaffolding came close, mind you). It was nice to see Trevor again and while I love Iron Man 3, hopefully this explanation will appease people who didn’t like its Mandarin twist.

If I’ve a criticism, it’s that there was a little too much exposition at times, accompanied by flashbacks. Also, while the initial big climactic showdown looked set to depart from the typical MCU one, the fight between the two mystical creatures did become a little uninvolving.

Minor quibbles really; I had no idea what to expect from this, having little knowledge of the comic strip and while it was probably the MCU film I was least buzzed for in some time, it was the best origin pic of theirs in an even longer time.

 

I saw it yesterday with my Hubby and some friends (one of whom is an old school Marvel comics fan) and loved it! I loved the various nods to real Chinese mythology, the character development, Leung's nuanced performance as a man driven by grief, but most of all, I *adored* the deep friendship between Shang-Chi and Katy. 10!

 

I'm an old Marvel fan but I never followed any of the more urban heroes or comics like iron fist or Shang Chi. That said, I enjoy cheesy (and non cheesy) Kung Fu films on the screen because of the fight choreography in the action.

I loved this film, and hats off to the folks at Marvel for making a very good. entertaining, and just plain fun Kung Fu film spectacular. Because I'm still a little afraid of the COVID-19 situation, I was planning on waiting to see this when it hit Disney+; but I had a few friends who really wanted to catch it in the theaters, so I figured what the heck. We went mid week, as well as a show that they weren't putting a discount on because honestly we didn't want to see it in a fully crowded theater, and even at the time we went it was about 3/4 full, but we were able to maintain spacing.

I hadn't really followed the films casting developments so the fact that Michelle Yeoh was also in it was a pleasant surprise. I also enjoyed what they did with Ben Kingsley, and his reprisal of a certain role from iron Man 3.

This film is in my top three of all MCU films made to date; and I thought the action, humor, and fight choreography was all very entertaining and very well done.

I also really loved and laughed hard at the second to last post/during credits sequence.

The whole: "Yes we could... OR .." and then we have the three of them at a karaoke bar singing horribly.

I loved that they effectively set this up with the earlier bit in the film where the main characters did something like this instead of going to sleep before work It was perfectly executed, and really fit the characterizations that they set up; and I just didn't expect it which was part of the charm for me.

 

The Hand have been established for MCU purposes via Daredevil and Defenders, yes?

 

They were established/referenced in the very first iron Man film back in 2008.

 

Ten Rings, yes. Hand, no.

 

No, they haven't. But I don't care. We haven't had anything in the MCU that directly contradicts anything from the Netflix shows so that's good enough for me.
