What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

The effects are largely bad and the editing and story explanation could both use some serious work but it's not even close to the worst film in the franchise.

^I had no idea I was meant to dislike STV until I found fandom. Still think the fireside chat is one of the best scenes from the films. Been a long time since I've watched any of the original flicks.

The special effects were the main problem, IMHO.

Kirk’s “I need my pain” speech is one of my favorite moments in all the franchise.

Our differences in taste are odd and amusing. I prefer PIC leaps and bounds over DISCO. LD might be better than DISCO in my opinion, but I'm not sure about that.

Now, SNW I think is going to be awesome and much more my cup of tea.

TOS
TNG
DS9
VOY
PIC
LD
DISCO
ENT

I first saw STV when I was a sophomore in high school. I think i was becoming interested in other things. Star Trek was something my parents were into. It was not cool, and a movie about the broken dreams and laments of middle aged people did not resonate with me. I saw it once, and lost all interest in Trek and did not really watch Start Trek again until I just sort of changed into seeing Deep Space 9 one day, years later.

Story wise, it's better than TMP (but I like TMP as a sort of moving painting, more than a story). I rewatched it last year, the first time in ages, and it still has a tired "let's get one more movie in before we go our separate ways" feel to it. At the same time I appreciate a lot of the outdoor scenes a lot more now.

My opinions change but I regard it as a better movie than Nemesis or Insurrection. Nemesis is a fucking mess and Insurrection is long, drawn out TNG episode. TFF is a long, drawn out TOS episode, but I like TOS better.

Which film are you referencing here?

After years in the barren wastelands, it's currently a great time to be a TV Trek fan. I'm sorry if people don't like all that's being produced right now but I prefer it to the big fat nothing we had for years.

I mean I have Lower Decks, so I'm not complaining. And there's still hope that I might enjoy SNW as well.

It's not like PIC hurts me by existing or anything like that, I just didn't enjoy it.

I kinda see the various incarnations of Trek as if somebody offered me a bowl of many different kinds of fruit. I take the ones I like and leave the ones I don't.

My ranking might be controversial, in that I put modern incarnations ahead of most of the stuff I grew up on in the 90's.

TOS

DS9

DSC
PIC

TNG

ENT

VOY

LD

Depending on how S2 PIC and S4 DSC go, there's a chance of a flip-flop there. DSC had a less-enjoyable S3 by my measure (also controversial, I'm sure) and PIC was awesome until a slight decline for the finale, which I still enjoyed seemingly more than most. PIC was high enough quality for 7 of the 10 episodes that, if it had stuck the landing, it would be in position to challenge DS9....which is a pretty tall order.

Eh, by now every ranking is probably "controversial" by the internet definition of the word (i.e. an opinion that isn't shared by 100% of people)

Aye, Orphalesion has the right of it. But some will be more controversial than others. And the why and wherefore of ranking effects it too. If you assign Voyager a lower rank because you think its writers lacked a clue, that is not particularly controversial. Badmouthing Voyager because you think a Star Trek captain should be a man... horse of a different color.

I thought the penultimate episode was flaming hot garbage (mostly due to Goldsman's bush-league direction) - felt exactly like the first half of a crappy TNG two-parter, right down to people in colorful futuristic outfits hanging out on some modernist compound.

The finale was a bit of a step up however, largely due to the coda with Data. Yeah, it was emotionally manipulative, but it worked better than anything that had come before.

My ranking:

I like them all.

I agree....that's really the bottom line.

I think that in 800+ shows and 13 movies, Trek has managed to move me to tears about half a dozen times. That was one of them.

Yeah....I'd say I tear up a little for the following:

TWOK gets me twice....Spock's farewell to Kirk, and David telling Kirk that he's proud to be his son
The ending of "The Inner Light" when Picard says "Oh....it's me!" and his loved ones come back to see him.
The ending of "The Visitor" (and maybe other parts besides the ending) lol
When Sisko has his breakdown in "Far Beyond the Stars"
Kirk's "oh my" when he dies in GEN

....and this final farewell scene with Data and Picard from PIC

I'm sure there are 1-2 others I'm not thinking of right now, but that pretty much captures it.

Edit: Pike's death and Kirk's reaction in STID.

When Lal dies.
When the EMH's daughter dies.

Me = :wah:

Lal.

Sisko stopping the temporal accident and finding out both he and Jake are okay.

McCoy's dad dying in front of his eyes.

Many others, though too long to accurately list without this becoming a wall of text.

The opening of ST 09 will never not make me cry. Also, Pike's death in ST ID.
As well as TWOK, David's death, Jadzia's death, the end of "Terra Prime" with Trip and T'Pol and their daughter.

I'd also say that since becoming a parent, the episode Time's Orphan can make me a bit misty eyed.

Yeah, it's not a particularly good episode, but damned if I can't identify with Miles.
