Spoilers TOS: Living Memory by Christopher L. Bennett - Review Thread

Been wondering myself how they'd handle that.

 

@Markonian and @Christopher I haven't heard anything being sung yet. I'll keep an ear out for it, and let you know. I'm at chapter three right now, and decided that was a good place to stop for today. I'll pick up again tomrrow.

I just got to page 144 and you just got me emotionally worked up, Mr. Bennett. Damn you, sir! Lol. In all seriousness, and without getting very spoilery with the book still fresh on bookshelves, this is the most I've cared about Uhura in quite some time. I know I'm only halfway through the book, but this might be my favorite trek book of yours yet.

 

Kirk did know Sulu had a daughter, and indeed he'd met her before, 12 years earlier, according to Chekov. (Transcript) He wasn't surprised by her existence, just wondering how Sulu managed to find the time for a family.

 

I just finished reading this book. And voted outstanding. I really liked how Uhura's story is dealt with in the book getting to know more about her family and her past.And the other Characters story arcs in the book.The story with the Warborn at Starfleet academy is well written and I liked how the different Arcturans try to deal with being on Earth and trying to adjust to Starfleet academy and other Alien races and cultures Also the mystery of the flares in space appearing around different planets and trying to unravel the mystery of what's causing it is very intriguing .I thought this book was well written and I liked it alot.

 

Oh my. Mr Petkoff has in general been a brilliant ST narrator, but this time he's outdone himself: he does indeed sing, with a delicate voice, and somehow makes the whole experience feel consistent. Amazing!

Also, I chuckled at the lockdown joke :-)

I really appreciate that we're given the puzzle in such a way that we witness how the characters are trying to figure it out. Maybe it's trivial the way I put it, but I like it when the author shows us the reasoning, and, perhaps even more importantly, when he makes the characters ask the natural questions (this element is missing from many SF novels). 3 hours in, enjoying a lot!

 

Oh, I wasn't expecting that. I thought they might bring in a female vocalist for that.

 

I'm up to chapter 9, and I did hear Mr. Petkoff sing a couple of lines in chapter 8. I'm really enjoying this more than I thought I would so far.

 

Picked up this book on Sunday. Turns out it is the first Trek novel I have bought since October last year! I always enjoy the movie-era so looking forward to reading it.

 

I just finished this. Imo, this was one of Christopher Bennett's strongest trek tales yet. I couldn't put it down.

 

Amazon.de listed it as unavailable. Thalia lists it as available on July 8th.... The dead tree edition.....

It was an excellent story--I really appreciate how Christopher L. Bennett does so much with the era between the first two Trek films.

 

@Kertrats47 and I recorded our review for Positively Trek (coming out tomorrow). We both loved the scene between Uhura and her family that I want a follow-up book about her growing relationship with them.

 

oh yeah when Uhura had that break through memory during the scene with her brother, it just about choked me up!

 

I'm glad that scene is resonating with people. I drew on my own experience of reconnecting with my wider family after my father passed away. It wasn't nearly as turbulent as Uhura's reunion, thankfully, but I went through a similar process of discovering that there were people who were still there for me even after being cut off for a long time.
