    Interesting insights there.
I hate to be that guy but Burnham isn't the first Black female captain in Star Trek. The late Madge Sinclair holds that honor being the unnamed captain in Star Trek IV. Miss Sinclair later on played Captain Silva LaForge of the lost Starship Hera on TNG. TNG's first season also had Captain Tryla Scott. Captain Emily Bosch was also on PIC. And even Lower Decks' Captain Freeman beat DISCO to the punch, show wise and in Trek history/canon.

I do get what they are implying in terms of Burnham being the first Black female captain who heads a Star Trek series, but the question to Mrs. Martin-Green was not worded correctly.

It's obvious what they meant. Just like back in the day people referred to Sisko as Star Trek's first black captain, or Janeway as Star Trek's first female captain, despite black captains, female captains, and even black female captains having already been featured in the franchise. Just publicity buzzwords, nothing to get too worked up over.

Heck we had black Admirals and female admirals and black female admirals before we had black/female captains headlining series. That shouldn't detract from SMG's achievement nor what it will mean for thousands of girls and women of colour who become inspired by Captain Burnham.

It's funny how Burnham and Sisko (the two leads who started out as commanders) both got promoted to captain at the same relative points in their series, the season three finale. It means nothing of course, just a mild coincidence. And Burnham's road to captain was a little bumpier. :)

    Lead character vs one-off?

Seems like a pretty big distinction.

So did all of us as well. It's not like they were subtle about it.

Even though it was more of a question of when rather than if Burnham would become captain, the series did show that her rise to the captain's chair was not an easy one and that she did stumble more than once along the way. She's not a perfect person, and she has flaws, but she does have the ability to rise to the occasion in extraordinary circumstances like most good captains.

If the Shenzhou had never been sent to investigate that damaged communications relay so long ago, Burnham may have become a captain much sooner of maybe another vessel, IMO.

Was this really something that was suppose to be a surprise? I mean did one person ever think she would not someday be made Captain? This feels like many of the show's twist in that people are like 10 steps ahead of where the writers think the fans are with their predictions.

It was a given to me. I thought that was the whole point of the show to see her rise through rank to be Captain one day. Basic character journey.

I don't think the showrunners didn't think we'd think Burnham would become a Captain one day. They set it up right from the beginning of "The Vulcan Hello" when Captain Georgiou says Burnham should become a Captain one day. And then, when Emperor Georgiou leaves the series in the third season, she tells Burnham the same thing: that she should become Captain. They reinforced it by having both versions of Georgiou tell her the same thing.

This news article is just something that's thought up during a slow news cycle (for Discovery anyway) where they have to have something. That's all this is.

As an Asian myself, I'd like to have seen Philippa Georgiou (Prime version) as the first female Asian captain for the past few seasons before she handed off the role to Burnham and got her own show. Not kill her off in the premiere, and replace her with the mess of a Mirror character they have now.

I would have liked to seen more of Captain Georgiou as well. In fact I think I would have liked the whole show be about her instead of Burnham. I think a show about Captain Georgiou having to chase a renegade Starfleet ship under the command of Captain Lorca into unknown space would have been a great Red October meets the The Fugitive show where you cut back and forth between the hero and villain.

They could have done with more of her as from what little we’ve seen, Georgiou seem to be one of the worst captains in starfleet

Maybe a limited series or Short Trek will let us see her again. Or you know a. Discovery flashback scene or episode.

I mean she was about to recommend that Michael should be a captain when she was nowhere near ready and she seemed completely useless during the battle. Then she died and got eaten. Probably why no one talks about her. :)

One of the best aspects of Mirror Georgiou is how Michael is still learning from her. Moving past guilt, pain and shame.

Sisko promoted Eddington up the chain of command without realizing he was a Maquis the whole time. And he was completely useless at Wolf 359  (see how unfair that seems now to Georgiou?)

Did Sisko promote him? I know Eddington basically was able to fool him and Sisko said he once invited him to a baseball game but I don't recall a promotion. I know him being stationed at DS9 was also against his wishes. I remember him telling Odo that when he got pissed when he came aboard and almost quit.
