Well, that's a point of contention. Different strokes and all that. I think the point is that back when he was in consideration for the role, he could be both serious and lighthearted, which he showed a lot of in Magnum. It's only later in his career that he started to pick more serious roles such as in Blue Bloods. His early career was full of comedies.
Fair. That he would not be believable to me (since that needs to be emphasized) as Indiana Jones. There is a fine line in that role and I am not convinced that Selleck could do it. I think he would have a more serious touch in the role. Again, subjective for me. I'm sure fans will find his inclusion to be perfectly acceptable. This is just my old man moment.
Of course, that is all after the fact. At the time, though, the character of Indiana Jones still had to be defined.
Another fair point. As I stated my response is very much stick in the mud-ish in terms of my perception of Selleck at the time. I did not find him funny despite enjoying Three Men as movies. To me he comes across as super serious so speculation as to casting I find odd, especially in retrospect. Again, me being grumpy old man.
Our ideas of characters are often so firmly rooted in terms of who played it, but I always love to imagine how they’d turn out - for better or worse - if played by someone else. As far as I know, Tim Matheson, Peter Coyote and John Shea were also under consideration for the role (I don’t know if this was just a rough, long list or if they got as far as auditions), all of whom would probably have been very different from Ford. I remember hearing an interview with Dirk Benedict in which he claimed that he’d been close to landing the role but that Spielberg and Lucas then decided to go for someone more physical, in the shape of Ford. I’m not convinced by his claim, given how Lucas apparently disliked BSG (in which Benedict played Starbuck, of course) and didn’t work again with John Dykstra after he provided the SFX for the series.
Yeah.. i could see that. Ironic since he played Jack Ryan too. Plus, he also pulled an Indy-ish turn, being chased by natives in ST:ID
