What if Earth is the only place with life?

Well, all mysticism aside, my opinion remains unchanged.

It doesn't matter what a few people say. The powers that be will always follow the line of least resistance, which is the one leading to our annihilation.

Look how little effect the protestors of this world have on the way it's going. There will only be token measures, to appease the clientele... In the meantime, Nero fiddles while Rome burns...

That makes no sense. The line of least resistance is not to create technology in the first place.

I'm not sure what your opinion is even based on, besides science fiction and cynicism, and the fact we're on a bad trajectory at the present moment. The whole reason we are in environmental crisis is because we learned how to build technology before we learned what releasing carbon would do to the atmosphere, and too many people got dependent on that technology for their livelihoods by the time we figured it out. There's no basis at all to assume that sequence of events happens the same for every alien world.

It's certainly a possibility, but suggesting it's an inevitability not only for us but for ALL creatures who figure out abstract thinking is classic Dunning-Krueger.

Wrong the creation of technology is inevitable. It started when people realized that using rocks and sticks to defend themselves was more effective than using their bare hands...

Technology accelerated when some people realized that it could translate into greater profits. That's what drives technology forward.

Wrong, the people with the most power, don't care about the environment. They would use it as an argument to sell their products but make only token concessions because their main concern is to maximize their profits. Wake up and smell the coffee, that's what is happening right now and what was happening two hundred years ago. Fundamentally nothing has changed.

Of course, it's inevitable, because the people at the top will always be the ones that privileged profit over anything else (including the environment)

As soon as some rich and powerful guy stops fighting to stay at the top their influence will dwindle... The environment will never be a priority, no matter how much the world is damaged.

If the original premise is true, then, IMO,
1.) We have almost a moral obligation to ensure something so rare as life outlasts the death of our Sun, and
2.) It's all ours, baby! Let's go get it!

I'm going to go with this.

If our planet is the only one that gave birth to intelligent life that has tried to reach out past the borders of its homeworld then "what's out there" is ours for the taking.

If we are not the only life then somewhere in the future we will get spanked if we cross someone else's borders.

Well it's pretty hard to burn down a whole planet

This line of thought, if adhered to wholeheartedly, leads to a single inevitable conclusion.

But for some reason you seem not to have reached it. Odd.
