Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

This is absolutely the right decision. With the aggressive international vaccination programs and the already increasing box office receipts from them Dune having just shy of 7 weeks theatrical exclusivity will allow Dune to make the necessary bank for Legendary, it's investors, and the cast & crew with back end points to make enough money to continue the franchise - assuming it's the success we all hope it will be.

At a 45 day theatrical exclusivity it will be hitting streaming close enough to the theatrical release to still be buzzworthy so those who are still hesitant about theatres or just prefer the digital experience don't have to wait that long to see it, as well as giving those of us who will watch it multiple times an early way to legally watch it at home not too long after release, cutting down on piracy. It also means it's available for rent at the start of the first post pandemic holiday season for family gatherings to rent.

And deadline has updated the story with this:

"Addressing the deviation in release plan, Warner Bros distribution chief Jeff Goldstein said there was “no change” to the October 1 date for Dune. The film, like the rest of the slate, will open in theaters the same day it arrives on HBO Max, he said."

So it could be it was early leak and is accurate but not how WB wants to announce it, or legendary leaking to show WB the response as a negotiation tactic, or someone just getting shit wrong.

I wouldn't say they got it wrong yet. Could be it just hasn't all been signed off on or that WB didn't want it breaking on the same day as the sale/merger. Could be a lot of reasons.

This is the obvious solution and when Disney made the Shang Chi announcement I've been waiting for this to come out too

And just when I was starting to come around to the possibility of watching the movie at home. Having been on Lockdown again the past few weeks, I've found watching movies on the Cable's On Demand or on streaming services a very convenient way to pass the time on my days off (yes, even in Lockdown I have a job that requires me to leave the house). And although I am against the thirty dollar price tag to watch new theatrical releases at home, for Dune I was considering making an exception.

Whatever, I'll just be glad to finally see this movie, whenever and however that is.

WB theatrical releases aren't available on Canadian HBO Max, but rather are available through either Amazon Prime or a cable service's On Demand content, but both options mean paying twenty-five to thirty dollars, depending on the movie. This is how it went with Wonder Woman 1984 and Godzilla vs Kong.

That sucks, I had assumed that everybody who got HBOMax got the free same day movies.

We don't have HBO Max in Canada. We have CraveTV which has the HBO license but you have to keep paying higher amounts for higher tiers that have newer content and movies and then pay more to rent some movies.

Express VPN with a US iTunes account is a good way to get the service if you don't live in the Colonies.

Are VPNs working for streaming again? I used to vpn into US Netflix all the time but they somehow blocked them a few years ago. Nowadays if you try you get an error message

Netflix is the exception. The others work fine. For Netflix you need a VPN plugin to watch it on a computer. For streaming devices like a Roku or FireTV it's a bit trickier to do.
I use an Apple TV with modified DNS addresses. That works for HBO Max, Hulu and Peacock.

Which is why I usually avoid the thirty dollar price tag for the early release streaming titles available. Since I always go to the theatres by my self, I can buy my ticket and a meal to eat at a nearby restaurant for just under thirty dollars. Paying thirty just to watch the movie at home just makes no sense at all to me.

The programmer at Cannes was asked if any American producers/directors had submitted any big films.

He replied that yes, one had.

Some rando screenshot that reply and tweeted that must be Dune based on the word "planetary" being used.

From there it's being shared across the internet as "Dune is premiering at Cannes!"

It's not impossible Dune will premiere at Cannes but there is no reason to suspect it will.
