So after spending the last couple weeks rebuffing any offer of help from the federal government, the Ontario government has now... asked the federal government for help. On Monday, they asked for help getting more medical staff into hospitals. The federal government has announced that the Canadian Armed Forces will deploy up to three medical assistance teams to try to shore up Ontario hospitals. As well, Ottawa is going to co-ordinate getting some volunteer medical staff in from other provinces, starting with a group from Newfoundland & Labrador on Tuesday.

Our daily new case number has actually dropped for a couple days in a row now, but since hospitalizations tend to trail the new case numbers, the number of COVID patients in hospitals is expected to continue rising over the next little while.

Oh, and of course also on Monday... the PC government voted down a Liberal private member's bill to give Ontario essential workers 10 paid sick days.

Sending positive vibes to everyone in Ontario, as well as in India and other places dealing with the surge in cases and the subsequent wave.

Has anyone had hayfever or a cold and then suddenly you have to sneeze and can't suppress it, or have to blow your nose suddenly every eye is looking at you funny?

    It just feels really awkward.

Yes, I've had hayfever ever since I was little, so I know the feeling well. It's a little better now, as I've mostly grown a tolerance to it, but whenever I'd go to Ottawa to visit my grandparents, it'd always flare up. For some reason, they'd have more of a particular pollen that'd set me off than I would back home.

But consequently, I just sneezed right after looking at your post.

It was up to the employer. Many employers do provide paid sick days, but there was no legal requirement that they had to, so of course many didn't.

In November 2017, the Liberal government introduced two paid sick days as part of widespread labour reforms. However, the Progressive Conservatives formed government after the election in June 2018, and one of their earlier actions was to repeal the paid sick days, putting us back to the situation prior to November 2017. Then the pandemic happened a couple of years later.

After voting down the private member's bill to provide 10 paid sick days, as mentioned in my earlier post, the PC government finally unveiled their plan. They have introduced a temporary change that will require employers to provide up to three days of paid sick leave, but only for reasons related specifically to COVID-19:

This is only a temporary program, which will expire in September. So there is still no permanent legal requirement to provide paid sick days for non-COVID reasons.

In other Ontario pandemic news, today our current lockdown was extended by another couple of weeks, and is now scheduled to run until June 2.

    Oh people are shit.

There is a facebook page for one of our local TV stations talking about a state matter to do with Covid, over here businesses have QR codes whee you have to check in at the front of any business you enter via scanning a QR code. It's to help with contact tracing but the amount of people that don't get that and instead are posting about how this is too much government control are shitting me off....

I called them conspiracy nuts and then got abused for the privilege.

Raab and Patel would certainly be up for doing away with sick pay.

    And annual leave, maternity leave...
