Star Trek 2009-11 years later

Beyond will always be just OK for me. Kirk's arc is incredibly potent and I enjoy it very much as a strong continuation from 09 and ID. However, Carol Marcus' absence is noticeable, Krall as a villain is very sporadic, with alternations between truly menacing and nearly a non presence. The rest is a lot of fun and totally enjoyable. As a final outing it was fine because it left me wanting more and I think that's OK.

I thought he was gonna, in the theater. I was certain! Kirk would find a way to not destroy the Narada in '09.

Those wo uld have been very Star Trekky.

Fool me twice. . .

There was another ending??
i don’t remember the details exactly, but you’ll notice that Krall/Edison at a certain point sees his image as a human in a floating shard. Allegedly, in the original version that is the moment he realizes his plan is wrong, stands down and surrenders to Kirk. The studios objected, so instead he’s evil to the end and is killed, but I find the original idea to be very “Trek”.

One step at a time. And Krall showing regret after torturing and sucking the life out of Starfleet officers would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Surrendering may have been a bit of a leap but sacrificing himself to save Kirk from, uh, something might have been a nice hint of redemption, and for a moment I did think that was where it was heading.

That looks like it was intended entirely as seen, where he has a moment of weakness then redoubles his efforts. There was a LOT of nonsense misinformation going around Facebook groups when Beyond was released. I recall one prominent hater insisting Shohreh Aghdashloo's Commodore Paris was added in later during reshoots to replace a puppet even though there were photos of her scene with Chris Pine leaked during filming. And someone else watched a chopped up pirate version of the movie then went on a paragraphs-long rant about Krall's "unmasking" having been cut from the movie. He was under the impression Edision was a Scooby Doo villain and Krall was a disguise. His version omitted all the transformation stuff and the poor lad was so dense he didn't realise:lol:

A long time ago, when I saw MI:III, I sat in the audience stewing that Philip Seymour Hoffman's character was steps ahead of Ethan Hunt throughout the film. Hunt was outthought at every turn. Si I was looking forward to then conclusion, wherein I was sure that Hoffman was going to get his comeuppance from Hunt. Imagine my surprise when Hunt is passed out and Hoffman is defeated by Hunt's wife.

I'm not a fan of Beyond. That's a huge understatement. In the "worst film" thread I went back and forth between Nemesis and Beyond before settling on Beyond. But as bad as I think it is, my opinion would have been a lot worse if they had clapped on an "All is forgiven" ending.

I'm not sure it is a "All is forgiven" so much as having a repentant villain. Which, again, is an interesting idea but one that would feel very much tacked on at the end of Beyond. And would not make up for Krall's inconsistent presence as a villain.

Precisely: more a “All is going to court and he'll get due process”.

as much as I liked beyond (more than the previous three movies for sure) I agree that his motivations are somewhat lacking. And that, as in the traditional kelvinverse style, much of the plot is based on contrived coincidences.

I think his motivations are fine. I think he swings from being this menacing figure that is almost inhuman in his drive to break apart the society that he felt abandoned him. I mean, as far as motivation I follow that just fine. But, it is his presence that lacks because that motivation is basically him sitting around until that magic moment occurred.
