Yup. I'm really loving the second season. The finale is going to be intense.

Yeah, been watching and I was initially skeptical about the show early on in the first season, but by the second season, it's become quite an entertaining show. It actually kind of feels like something James Cameron would come up with.

Honestly, I find the movie and the TV show to be completely different beasts. I found the movie merely Ok, but the series explores the entire concept more in-depth, which I feel makes it more watchable.

The movie wasn't really plot based. Everything in it happened to demonstrate the metaphor. The show is actually watchable just as a sci fi.

And I guess that's the thing. In the end, the TV show does more with it.

Been loving the new season. Sean Bean has been great as Wilford, he's one my favorite current TV villains.

    Wow, what an intense finale.

I prepared myself since early in the season that there was a strong chance Melanie wouldn't survive her suicide mission for science, even if the show kept stringing out hope that she would. But as much as I will miss Melanie and Jennifer Connelly's fantastic performance, I firmly believe the show made the right choice. It breaks my heart that we won't see more of Melanie bending her broke relationship with Alex, but the fact that my heart hurts shows that it was the right choice. A lot of impossible things happen in this show, most of which I don't mind overlooking for the sake of drama, but it's also important to show that the stakes are still deadly and failure has its consequences.

Plus, Melanie's death counters everyone's expectations that yet another Sean Bean character would die prematurely. Hell, the show even winked at that notion when Alex nicked his neck but I expected he would survive that. I was less sure he would survive the destruction of the aquarium car, but I'm glad he survived nonetheless. Not just to subvert expectations but also because the show needs its villain and Wilford is an excellent foil for Layton and everyone else.

Speaking of whom, I figured Layton wouldn't stay in the sewage sector for long, but I hadn't expect Ruth to join him. Back in the beginning, I would've said that was the perfect punishment for her. Well, it still is but now she doesn't deserve it. Ruth has come a long way...and she's going to really pay for it because she didn't make it to the other side of the aquarium in time (all for her precious teals!). Question is will she have any allies to keep her hidden from Wilford's almighty wrath? She made many enemies during her time as the head of Hospitality and not many saw her change her ways. Perhaps her walk of shame to the sewage sector might have changed some minds?

I wasn't too worried but I was relieved nonetheless that Wilford's attempt to weaponize Josie against Layton failed and she came to the rescue when Boki failed to break the aquarium car connection. Even if it meant swallowing the notion that she was able to run up the icy train hundreds of cars away in short notice. Also how she managed to get off the aquarium car before it disintegrated. In fact, I thought she was dead until she showed up in the final scene. But like I said before, I'm willing to look past this kind of thing for the sake of drama.

We lost Melanie, presumably Boki (unless he also miraculously got off it in time), and poor Javi (that's a truly horrible way to die). Now that the cast has been thinned (along with Terrence earlier this season and maybe Icy Bob, I can't recall), I hope we'll see the return of Miles and Jinju next season. Miles was barely namechecked (and maybe appeared once?) but Jinju completely disappeared. In fact, I couldn't even remember if she died during the revolution but I think she and Bess merely just broke up. I know Sykes is joining the main cast and Archie Panjabi is also joining the show as a new character, but I hope there's room for those two characters to reemerge.

Edited to add: TV Line talked with executive producer Becky Clements about the season finale, Melanie's fate (she may or may not actually be dead...), and what to expect in season 3.

I was wondering about Jinju too, it was weird we focused so much on Bess without a single mention of her. I know they broke up, but you'd still think the show would have checked back in on her at some point.
Yeah, that was an awesome finale.
I was pretty shocked they didn't find Melanie, I kept expecting her to suddenly show back up at some point.
Wilford's Carnival was seriously fucking creepy, and his little puppet show was seriously messed up.
I kept wondering if it was going to turn out Miss Audrey was acting this whole time, but it looks like she really is on Wilford's side.
Ruth has really come a long way from being a Wilford believer back in Season 1.
I'm glad they didn't kill Wilford yet, Sean Bean has just been awesome all season.

Such a great series! It's really surprised me in a lot of ways to become one of the best current sci-fi shows, IMHO. I find there's a lot of great attention to detail.

Heh, yeah to say the finale was intense was an understatement. But just wondering something. Is it two episodes for those of you watching on TNT? On Netflix, which international rights for the series, the final two episodes were released today, and I'm assuming they had these playing back-to-back.

Yes, it was a double episode. (I think they skipped last week to double up on Monday). However, TNT actually had the 2nd to last episode On Demand before it officially aired.

Have they ever said how long it takes to get from one end of the train to the other? It's got over a thousand cars, but they seem to get from one end to the other pretty quickly. I know they have those little karts in the undertrain, but it still seems awfully fast.

I've often wondered that as well. I guess we have to assume the karts are really fast. LOL.

Rather than doing that daft "spoilers....." think could you not have used the actual spoiler function. I have just seen a massive spoiler trying to scroll past your post

That's why I never go into a thread related to anything I haven't seen and don't want to get spoiled on. Even if it's not a spoiler thread there's still a pretty good chance spoilers might sneak through. Hell, I've even slipped at least once or twice and accidently openly posted spoilers in a non-spoiler thread.

Just finished season 2 and was really impressed how this show gripped me. I was sceptical at first as I thought the premise and setting would mean the writers would run out of track after a season but they have kept it interesting without reverting to completely wacky stories that go completely off the rails.

It has a few plots where you need to really suspend belief like
Super iceman Josie or the death rate from constant rebellions and riots on a finite crew number. Also they have lost the bees, cows and now fish but no one seems too worried

But there is more than enough good about the show to get away with it

Yep, same, and good observation. It's a really solid sci-fi.

This reminds me of something I've been wondering about. Do they have more animals somewhere, or some other way to bring them back if/when they get off the train?

I'm just watching the fifth episode of the second season. I'm quite liking it, but there is problem which was present in the movie too: how is it possible that the tracks and related infrastructure are still intact after years at such low temperatures without any maintenance? Was it said in one of the episodes and did I miss it?

Not really. It's one of those things you have to look past to accept the premise of the show. I don't mind because I'm far more interested in the sociological and psychological aspects of the show.
