Definitely agree that Zach's style and working would suit a series (short or otherwise) more than film, I found it surprisingly engaging even with its slow pacing.

I will see it this weekend. I know that this has chapters with titles. But I am curious if those feel like true story breaks? Or somewhat arbitrary pauses in the narrative? If that is the case, it would explain his reluctance to air this over multiple nights.
Into Chapter 5. The breaks seem to make narrative sense and don't feel arbitrary. At least to me. Mileage and all of that.
I finished watching it. My first impression. It still feels like a course correction after BVS, although a smaller one compared to Justice League 2017 which just doesn't gel with the previous movies. I'm glad this was a 4 hour movie rather than a miniseries. Things that surprised me were scenes that were ones that I didn't realize were originally Snyder's. For example, I didn't expect the grave digging scene/idea to be part of Snyder's movie, The funny moments with Flash are mostly all Snyder's and not Whedon. Overall it's a good movie, not great, I think I feel more comfortable with the portrayal of these characters than I did with the previous Snyder movies. I liked it better than BVS and MOS.
In terms of how Clark and Bruce are characterised, I might agree somewhat. Though I will say that it's done smoothly enough that it feels less like a course correction and more like part of a planned character arc.
To give a comic book analogy; the chapter breaks feel like when you have a graphic novel that was originally put out as a 6-8 issue run. They don't end on cliffhangers or anything, but they don't all exactly have definitive crescendos either. Indeed I feel like it's less about how one ends than how the next one starts. It's more fluid than you'd get in episodic storytelling and kinda reminds me more like a new movement in a piece of music.
I guess that's just a complicated way of saying "yes, it feels natural enough". Feel free to pause and go grab a drink or whatever at those points as it won't break the flow.
You could be totally right on that. But according to interviews with Zack it seems the studio was mandating things left right and center during the making of the film. My impression is that he had to dial things back and that may have been part of it. Either way, I liked it.
Per the title card at the top, it was Snyder's artistic vision. Its how the IMAX version was to look. I understand the desire to maintain his vision. Fine. Whatever. But it would have been nice to offer a 16:9 version for those people who like wider screens. Could be worse. When I started watching it, I did it on my iPad while I worked. There were bars all around it. That was annoying. Then I decided I'd put it on one of my monitors run off of my personal Mac. The joys of working from home.
Movie was filmed in old school IMAX 70mm, which was 4:3.
Because this should be watched on IMAX. I watched it in the dark on a wide screen TV so it didn't bother me.
Should look very nice on my 4:3 TV. Muhahaha.
Are all imax releases 4:3? I have ever gone to one Imax movie in theaters and don't remember. So silly question, will they have a 16:9 as well?
I don't care about artistic vision and all that jazz. Watching 4 hours of 4:3 is pretty irritating, and I definitely don't have an imax screen at home.
Artistic vision, pfft. I'm surprised now this movies is not shot with 60fps as well.
You have an HD 4:3 TV?
IMAX digital is 16:9. Old school IMAX film is 4:3. Most directors compromise to 16:9 for home video releases, or even crop the movie down to whatever the non IMAX scenes were filmed at. Snyder decided against that, since the whole concept is that this is his definitive version. He said the true definitive version as he visualized is 4:3 b&w.

BTW, I have a question everyone. In the flash backs to when they first hide the mother boxes they seem to hide them twice? The humans hide it in cement and later the humans bury it in the ground but it was the same humans that were first given the mother box. So they put it in cement and later broke it open and changed to burying it?
That's a FIRM NO for me. I want to see what the director wants me to see, not "what I prefer". I wouldn't ask a painter to reframe an original painting because I prefer a different ratio. I am free not to like it, but artists are entirely free to present their work as they wish. And if I can't get the original, owing to limitations of tech (or stubborn non-artist interference), then I want as close to it as I can get (hence why I always get the variable aspect ratio version of any film that has that as part of its presentation). People want a different ratio? Let them shoot their own damn film.
Film is a visual medium that most certainly does reflect the vision of the director. Why would I (or anyone) want something other than what the creator of it intended? Do you protest when a musical piece was written for the clarinet that you would prefer it was on the bassoon? Do you tell people that Citizen Kane would look better in Cinemascope (2.35:1) than its original Academy (1.37:1) ratio?
I NEVER understand this attitude (and I LOATHE the fact that it led to 'pan and scan' versions of films on VHS back in the day, and on many cable movie channels today--I NEVER rent a VOD movie from my cable provider because 99% of the time it is reframed from its original aspect ratio to "fill the screen". UGGHHH.)
I don't have a preference for one ratio over another--I have a VERY STRONG preference for watching what the filmmaker wants me to see. Besides, those people triggered by "black bars" can simply use the zoom function on their displays. I'm just happy I'll be able to watch this as the director intended.
