No worries whatsoever, and apologies from me as well. Yours wasn't really any of the posts that made me start to boil over. Bad timing on my part. Carry on... :)

Why would Campbell say Prodigy if he meant Lower Decks? It makes no sense.

Surely he was told which show he was doing. :shifty:

I haven't listened to the interview, so I have no idea if he actually said Prodigy, Prodigy just comes from the article on the interview, with no direct quotes of him saying the name. All it says is that it was described as a comedy.

Non-fans can get easily confused about such things. Back in the '90s, I went out to Hollywood to pitch for DS9, and I stayed with a cousin who worked in the entertainment industry. When I talked to him about how I'd previously tried sending a spec script to TNG and hoped to get a chance to pitch for Voyager afterward, I gradually realized that my cousin had no idea all those shows were part of the Star Trek franchise.

Heck, there are people who don't even know the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars, or between DC and Marvel. It's all interchangeable to the uninitiated. Just because an actor is hired to show up at a studio and recite some dialogue, that doesn't mean they necessarily understand what it is they're performing for. They just have to hit their marks and remember their lines (heck, in animation they don't need to do either, since they can sit there with the script in front of them), and the rest is nonessential to know.

I don't know why, but I'm actually happy to have Okona back...and before anyone suggests a reason, it's probably Billy Campbell. He sounds like he's happy to be back too.

People know very little about pop culture outside their sphere of influence.

In a college spring break trip, my group stopped in Metropolis, Illinois. We played a trivia game that heavily involved Superman. The dialog in one of the questions was as follows:
Me: What color is Supergirl's hair? Ooh. This is an easy one.
    Woman on team one: PINK!
Me: Wha? No. Team two? You're up.
Everyone on team two: (Dead silence)
Me: Supergirl has blond hair. Just picture her.
Woman on team one: What is Supergirl?
    Me: The girl from Krypton.
Man on team two: What the fuck is Krypton?
    Me: Where Superman's from.
Woman on team one: Oh. I thought she was a Japanimation girl. Like the Powder Puff Girls. They all have pink hair, right?

Later in my life, shortly before Avengers 2, I went to a comic con with a man who wasn't aware of the existence of movies with more than one superhero in them, and wanted to explaining to me how this Iron Man is a character from the Thor movies, when they're so unlike each other. And in the same conversation, he said he never heard of Batgirl.

Four years ago, a coworker of mine talked about how hot she thinks a man named Russell Wilson is. I told her I haven't met him, and I asked what branch of our agency he works for. Turns out Russell Wilson is a pro football player.

That pretty much settles it. Since he hasn't read the role, maybe he was mistaken about which series it is. Perhaps Prodigy and LD are sharing enough production people that someone up the food chain gave him the wrong series name even if he got sent the right script. But that's unlikely.

I don't like the idea that both Star Trek animated series are referential comedy shows. Seems repetitive. I was hoping Prodigy would be a more serious action-adventure, albeit primarily aimed at younger viewers.

Admittedly, Okona was a comedic character even on TNG, so maybe he's like the Harry Mudd here and his feature performance is in a comedic episode in an otherwise dramatic season.

Meh... I have a vague recollection of the Okona character from back then. Not terribly memorable, IMO, and he was never asked to return to reprise the role. A strange choice to resurrect such a hugely minor piece of Trek lore, but I'm curious what they'll do with him. Hopefully a lot more than they did in TNG.

This is my thoughts. And it's a super odd pull on the lore and I don't see what possible positive they can get from it. I hope to be surprise but...

Okona is such a deep pull it feels like more like something Lower Decks would go for.

he wasn’t a good character at all so we’ll see. Hopefully Prodigy comes up with something good.

I am guessing this will be LD, as I hope Prodigy is not a comedy.

But what a lame ass episode of TNG to use for a follow up. Hopefully they won’t bring back Joe Piscopo’s holodec comic. But OK to bring back Teri Hatcher’s character.

Maybe it's less about the episode and more about Billy Campbell. He was kind of a big deal for a little bit there. He was the Rocketeer, after all.

From what I've read, Okona is supposed to be comedy relief.

Good find! I can't lie though, it doesn't exactly fill me with wonder. But, neither did the Picard casting sheets and I liked that.

    Fun to see Denobulans again.
