Yeah I saw an interview she gave and she started crying in the middle of it.

I wouldn't say I hate it, but it does have the opposite of the intended effect on me. Whenever she starts to turn on the waterworks, I just roll my eyes and think "oh boy, here we go again". I also think there's a problem when you ratchet up the emotional delivery to maximum in every scene, in that after a while its impact is diluted. I don't have a problem with characters expressing emotions, but it's like she only has one setting, "maximum". I wish she would get a little more sophisticated in her delivery and show some more range in her acting.

Some people just naturally cry. That's been my experience, both personally and professionally.

I'd like to see more episodic stuff, less mystery plot twists (Signals, Burn). I mean, have a theme (rebuilding the federation). You can visit old friends (New Vulcan, Trill, Earth, Andoria, Tellurite?, Denoblia, Orion, Kamanar, Betazed, Kardassia, Be'jor, etc) and new species. You can encounter problems.

But I do not want one, overarching "mystery" or pre-ordained plot point that drives absurd decisions during the season and costs us character development (Red Angel, Burn).

Let us see where Saru is at. What happens with Gray. How Burnham adapts to command. How Culber & Stamets are. And give the rest of the bridge crew some actual stuff to do.

Always liked this scene in The Magnificent Ferengi:

SISKO: May I help you, gentlemen?
    ROM: I was following you.
QUARK: We must have taken a wrong turn.
    SISKO: It looks that way.

Pretty sure that was his only scene.

But yeah, considering how well we knew most of the crews across the various series by the time season 4 rolled around ... it's quite a contrast with Discovery, where I can confidently say I only know who two of those five characters you listed are by name.

When you talk of a focus shift, do you mean episodes actually centered on these characters? I'd love to see that, but it would require a huge shift in the structure of the show. The plot-heavy season arcs don't leave much room for character work of any significant depth.

I think it's more likely they'll remain glorified extras. It would be nice to get to know Owo / Detmer beyond the scraps they've served us. Maybe give us a two parter where they're central to the storyline - no Burnham in sight to take the reigns / save the day.

    Sure.
If need be, then yes. I love what they did with Detmer and Owo this season. Keeping that in line for the next season would be nice.

Detmer's arc was nice. I was hoping there would be more to Owo's arc then "I can hold my breath for 10 minutes" (I double checked her Memory Alpha article to make sure I didn't miss anything, I didn't). Maybe in S4, Lt. Bryce will see grudge and comment that he's more of a dog person. Character development complete!

On a somewhat related note, in one of the ready room's they had the bridge crew on and they were all talking about how trilling and challenging it was to perform their scenes and how the writers did such a great job with their characters and it was like "you all know you're basically part of the set, right"?

They have a different perspective, I'm sure. One that we can't fully see or understand. I like it when they gush over doing stunts or bits. Makes me think they enjoy their jobs.

Already he is my favorite character if that happens. Well worth it.
Don't they realize they are working on an abomination before the Lord Roddenberry!?!

So, they are not allowed to enjoy it at all?

Not so much that, it was more like, they seemed to really embellish the challenges of writing and playing characters with no speaking lines. But then again, I don't know the first thing about acting.

Having done both speaking and non-speaking acting there is a bit more to it than just "Show up and stand there." Non verbal cues mean a lot to many humans and the audience is going to pick up on it.

Wait, Ronnie Rowe Jr.? Is that you?? Is that why you are so high on the show? On nm, you said you did non speaking AND speaking acting, you must be someone else then :)

I wonder if the fourth season will be split into two halves, if they can't finish it all in time but still want to get something live-action out in 2021?

Not including "That Hope Is You, Part 2" which only came out in 2021 as a technicality. :p

I wouldn't mind it if Lieutenant Nilsson got an arc.

That would be great from if they tied that format to the storytelling (i.e. two stories with a separate story arc for each half). I think it would help declutter things.

    What I think could happen:.
-Building on Burnham/Booker romance. Wouldn't be surprised if a child enters the picture.
-Saru getting his own command, and working often with Discovery.
-Tilly stays as DISCO first officer, though I would prefer they got another DISCO crewmember or someone from Starfleet.
-More screen time given to the other cast. For the last two seasons they've been planting more of these seeds and I think they might blossom in the fourth season. Here's hoping for a "Galileo Seven" episode with Bryce, Rhys, Owo, Nilsson, and Detmer.
-Gray being able to interact with the crew on a regular basis, and becoming a member of the crew.
-More interaction between Discovery and other Starfleet ships. Seeing Discovery visiting more Federation worlds and doing more exploration.
    -Earth returns to the Federation.
-We'll see what happened with the Klingons.
-Maybe we'll also see more with the Emerald Chain. I hope so because they still have potential as villains.
    -No Mirror Universe episodes.
    -Learning more about Kovich.
-Learning who the Federation president is.

    What I think will happen:

Gray/Adira will get more screen time.
    Burnham will solve a mystery
There will be a high concept challenge to overcome--they will be relying heavily on the 3 or 4 science advisors they now have.
The Federation will be rebuilt very slowly
Book will be a regular. The Romance with Burnham will eventually conflict with their mission(s)
Kovich will become the "information guy", and he will continue to leave cryptic breadcrumbs about just about anything, including the secret recipe for Klingon biscuits.
Tilly gets spaced (seeing if you're paying attention...but we can hope)
Less serialization: elements will be carried over week-to-week but we'll see more self-contained episodes.

    What I'd like to see:

A high concept science mystery (:techman:)
    More Kovich(:techman:)
    The UFP being rebuilt.(:bolian:)
More about the history since the 29th century, the Temporal Wars and time travel.
A task force with a better look at these ships.
More advanced tech, which they've melded in quite efficiently so far. They could certainly go further, but they have to limit themselves as concepts like programmable matter seems to catch viewers off guard.
Gorn. Because we need more Gorn.
