I am unabashedly optimistic. I don't need a TV show to inspire that. I work with humans on a daily basis to support building optimism, hope and personal responsibility to make changes. That's my bread and butter.I prefer optimism. I'm an unreconstructed Cambellite.
I would love to see a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek movie using footage from TOS episodes, taken out-of-context and changed into a new story. That would be the most hilarious thing ever. It would be my new favorite Star Trek movie.
See this mock trailer someone put together to see what I'm talking about.

Except that's not what happens. It is used as a sledgehammer to beat current Trek for not being Trek enough, or carrying Trek's spirit, or whatever fluff words are used to puff Orville up and look down on current Trek.I think it’s fair to compare The Orville and Star Trek (at least Berman era Trek) because the two are so similar.

I don’t watch The Orville as it’s not my thing at all. But I don’t have a problem with others enjoying it. Its fans, though, can be so obnoxious and insufferable it really leaves a bitter taste.

My only real issue with The Orville is that it gets treated as real Star Trek in a way that is extremely off-putting. I understand being somewhat passionate about a show (see my posts on Discovery) but rarely do it necessary to say this show doesn't compare to another show. A show should be entertaining without comparison. That's my view.I really liked The Orville for what it was (which was an amusing, fluffy little space adventure), until my exposures on this very board. People jamming something up my rear end trying to tell me that "this is TEH REEL STAR TRACK" really turned me off.
And, let's be honest, if the exact same show, with the exact same scripts, cast, etc. were being produced under the name "Star Trek," most of the people would hate it and be losing their minds over how derivative it is, too many raunchy jokes, Starfleet personnel acting unprofessionally, etc, etc, etc. It's insanity.
I can't recall where I posted it but this tendency to bring up Orville in discussions around Kurtzman Trek reminds me so much of being in retail and people going "Well Such store has this item." And it takes all my energy to not go "Then go there."The Orville is a fine enough show but it's getting damn tiresome to hear Trek fans bring it up every time a Kurtzman Era series falls short.
Which brings me to another experience in retail. People stating "You should do this and we would totally buy it." And that would not happen. So, what people are saying they want is usually not what they will actually buy.
